Description:
In order to fully understant what's going on today, it's imperitive to know what happned yesterday. Caughey reviews our birthright of freedom and examines the rise of the inquisitor, beginning with the Dies committee in 1938. But most of the book is concrned with the 1950s--with the rise of McCarthy and the descent of the nation to McCarthyism, with the resort of police-state methods and vigilantism, the the depreciation of the Fifth Amendment, with anti-intellectualism, and, fnally, with instances of holding the line against such attacks.

Description:
Pub by Methuen, 1896, 303 pp, hardbound, ex-lib. The cover has darkened with age, and the top of the spine has been damaged a bit when the book was pulled off a shelf. The handsome frontispiece engraving of Hugo is in excellent condition. At some point a repair was made to the title page. For a library book of this age it's in quite good condition. I don't think you'll be disappointed..

Description:
The full title is: DECK AND PORT; or, Incidents of a Cruise in the United States Frigate Congress to California with sketches [three-toned lithographs] of Rio Janeiro, Valpraiso, Lima, Honlulu, and San Francisco by Rev. Walter Colton, U.S.N. Pub by A.S. Barnes, 1850, 408 pp; a map showing the path of the journey, steel engraved frontispiece of Commodore R. F. Stockton, four tinted lithographs (including a great view of a barely populated San Francisco in 1846) and a number of small woodcuts. "Mr. Colton is an observing and ready writer; and his office on board of the ship afforded him every need facility for obtaining a knowledge of the character of the men on board, and of the multitude of incidents of every hue that make up the life in a ship. His is a free pen, and he writes with much facility of expression and elegance of taste; making one of the most agreeable volumes that has ever been written with reference to that increasing portion of the world."--Worcester Palladium. Description:
Pub by Longmans, Green, 1872, 2nd edition, hardbound, 461 pp. Full leather binding with gilt stamping on spine, cover, and board edges. Marbled endpapers and fore-edges. This is a very nice copy with just minor nicks, wear, and fading on the cover. Even the delicate--and rarely seen--gold-stamping on the board edges is mostly bright and evident. There are what appear to be some small ink stains on the front cover. What makes this an especially desirable copy is the book's provenance. The cover is gold-stamped in four centered lines, QUEEN ELIZABETH'S / GRAMMAR SCHOOL / FAVERSHAM / 1873. On the first blank page someone has written in ink, "Class II / French 2nd prize". The second edition of this book is even more desirable than the first, having been fully bound in leather, and you'll seldom find a copy in this condition. As an extra bonus there's a pressed wispy lock of delicate blonde hair perhaps from the head of the bright little girl who won the book--or, perhaps, from the head of the girlfriend…
