Somerset and London : Sampson Low, Marston and Co. Ltd. for Boots the Chemists A very good copy with very good dustwrapper in the original blue decorative cloth binding with 16 tipped in colour plates by Brock and Brittan. Undated but 1930's and commissioned by Boots the Chemists. The wrapper has a pasted portrait to the front and is complete but with a small tear and a little nibbling to the top spine edge. The spine is darker. It is in a protective wrap. The blue cloth binding is very bright and clean with gilt decoration and titles to the front board and spine. There is some pulling to the spine. Internally there is some offsetting from the advertisements on the wrapper ends to the endpapers. The frontispiece and title page have light spotting and the frontispiece has a couple of creases. Contents otherwise very clean. There is a recurrent paper flaw affecting some pages, which creates a light crease line from the gutter diagonally out into the text page for a couple of inches. London and New York : T C and E C Jack Ltd; E P Dutton & Co A fair copy in the original decorative binding with a pasted picture and black titles to the front board. Part of the Told to the Children series - undated but circa 1910. With colour frontispiece and 7 further colour plates of 'little actors from photographs'. The binding has fading to spine and board edges together with a little pulling to the spine. Many text pages are unopened. One play (Uncle Tom's Cabin) has been read and occasionally annotated in pencil. Occasional spotting but generally clean.

London : T Cadell Jun. and W Davies, 1802 A good to very good copy of the first translation into English of Dante's Divine Comedy. This copy retains the original marbled boards, with new calf spines and corners, so the bindings are clean, sound and tight with some light scuffing to the boards. The translation was completed by Henry Boyd, then Vicar of Rathfryland in County Down. The contents are complete with frontispiece portrait by Stothard and titles and half titles to each volume. Vol I: frontispiece; title; dedication; half title to Inferno; text 408pp. Vol II: title; half title; preliminary essay and text 384pp. Vol III: title; half title; preliminary essay and text with index, errata and addenda 420pp (more detailed collation available on request). London : John Booth, 1819 A very good copy in quarter leather binding with 28 hand coloured plates. This copy looks to be in a contemporary binding with new endpapers - so the book is sound and tight. The binding has wear to the top and bottom of the spine, and a little to the joints but is clean and sound with gilt title label and gilt bands to the spine. There is a pencil signature from 1975 to the fep. The book has clearly been used but carefully looked after. There are 2 ink signatures to the title page: Eleanor Moody of Bathampton House, Wiltshire; and Marianne ? of Aldwick Court, Somerset. From the writing it looks like Marianne has done a careful cross check between plates and text, writing the name of the animal neatly in pencil on the plate and writing a cross reference to the plate neatly in the side margin of the text. Edinburgh: Johnstone and Hunter, 1853 4th edition, revised and enlarged with notes and an appendix by John Scouler. An interesting historical work written to reconcile the difficulties between new findings in geology and scripture. In original decorative red cloth binding with gilt titles. With folding hand coloured section of 'a portion of the earth's crust'; title page; prefaces to each edition; explanation of the frontispiece; contents listing; text; appendix; index and glossary. With 8 black and white plates and illlustrations in the text. The binding is complete but shaken with rubbing to top and bottom of spine and corners. It is slightly grubby but has been protected by a wrapper. The front endpaper has split at the joint and has half a pasted label on the reverse of the front board and some small ink marking. Dublin: Royal Dublin Society, 1983 A near fine copy in very good dustwrapper. The wrapper has some light edge wear with a little marking and is in a removable plastic wrap.The black cloth binding is in very good clean condition. There is a dedication to 'John' on the front endpaper signed by 'David'. There is an offprint included - 'John MacCulloch's 'Millstone Survey' and its Consequences' 1984 by David A Cumming and that is also signed - so the David is the author of the offprint. The 'John' is John Bate, poet. Contents otherwise near fine.

London: Macmillan and Co., Limited , 1912 A very good copy of the limited Edition du Lux of which 150 copies were issued. In the original full vellum binding with gilt decoration and titles to the front board and spine. Top page edges gilted; remainder untrimmed. With tipped in frontispiece and 31 colour tipped-in plates by Warwick Goble. Goble (1862-1943) had become a resident illustrator at Macmillan and this is one of finest works. Contents are complete and in near fine clean condition. Endpapers have some browning. There is the occasional small pinprick spot in the text and some spotting on the uncut edges of the text pages. Plates are mounted on brown stock paper and are in lovely condition. The binding has lost its ties and there is some pocking to the vellum, slight marking and some scuffs. There is light pulling to spine ends and some wear to corners. The gilt decoration is still bright. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images.

Roterdam: Arnould Leers, 1658 A fair to good copy of the scarce 1st edition in largely contemporary full leather binding with portrait of Jaques Amprovx, 11 full page plates and 33 engravings in the text. The engraved title and 2 leaves of the table of chapters are provided in facsimile. Attributed to Charles de Rochefort, the Pastor of the French Protestant Church in Rotterdam - although there has been considerable dispute over the authorship. The vocabulary is by Father Raymond Breton. This copy has been rebacked and restitched, retaining the original contemporary boards with corners rebuilt. A new matching spine with raised bands and title label has been added. The original pastedown endpapers have been retained with a large armorial bookplate to the front pastedown and some old ink notes to the rear pastedown. New free endpapers have been added. London and New York : William Heinemann and Doubleday Page & Co, 1909 A good to very good copy of the 1st limited edition signed by Arthur Rackham in the original full vellum binding with tipped in frontispiece and 14 further tipped in colour plates. No 116 of a 1,000 printed. Top page edges gilted, remainder untrimmed. The untrimmed edges are slightly spotted. Plates on brown stock paper with captioned tissue-guards. Numerous black and white designs and illustrations. The binding has bright gilt decoration and titles but the vellum is pitted throughout. There is light wear to corners. The remains of the original ties are present. Internally the book is complete and in near fine clean condition. There is the odd spot, mainly to tissue guards and light toning to pages adjacent to the brown stock paper that supports the plates. London: Printed for the Author and sold by John Nutt, 1702 A good copy of the first edition of this scarce work in newer full leather binding. John Dennis (1657-1734) is best known as a dramatist and poet, who was, until his later years, well-regarded as a leading wit and critic. This copy is in a newer binding, with gilt titles to spine, by A W Lumsden of Edinburgh. There is bookplate of John Davie Manson Robertson, a noted Orcadian, to the front pastedown. A loose bookseller's catalogue indicates that Robertson probably obtained the work in marbled paper wraps and commissioned the binding. The wraps have been retained. Contents: rubricated title page dated 1702; dedication 2pp; introduction and text 54pp with large folding table; finis. The top margin has been very closely cropped so some page numbers are missing, but all the text is present. Amstelodami [Amsterdam]: Ex Typographia Blaviana , 1692 A good copy in contemporary vellum with a later taped spine with handwritten title. Latin translation of Descartes' last work - Les passions de l'ame, 1649, which originated from correspondence with Princess Elisabeth of the Palatinate, and is an exploration of the connection between human emotions - the province of the mind - and the physical body. The vellum is sound with the usual discolouration and a slight warp to the boards. There is tape at the front endpaper joint and a signature to the top of the fep. Page edges are red. Contents: title with printer's device; ad lectorem 2pp; epistola prima 18pp; epistola secunda with response 2pp; text pp 1-92 in 3 parts; Finis. An omnibus volume containing the following 6 stories: Operation Terror, Checkpoint Lambda, and Invaders of Space - by Murray Leinster; and The Crack in Space, Dr Futurity, and The Unteleported Man by Philip K Dick. With the original dustwrapper. The wrapper has some fraying to edges and a little mottling on the spine and back cover. It is in protective wrap. The cloth binding is nice and clean but with a hollow area to the spine caused by the width of the book. The contents are very clean and in very good condition. London : Rivington and Co, 1799 A fair copy of Edward Donovan's work on British Shells, in contemporary half morocco bindings with 180 hand coloured plates. Donovan is justly famed for his accurately observed and delicate illustrations of wildlife - mainly birds, insects, fish and shells. He took advantage of the large numbers of specimens being brought back to museums and private collections from voyages and expeditions. British Shells was issued in parts between 1799 and 1803 and subscribers would have been able to bind their copies as they chose. Donovan's works had limited distribution because of their expense, and have become scarcer as many sets have been broken up for their plates. This set is half morocco, with gilt lines to the spine and gilt titles, volume numbers and dates, and has marbled boards. The page edges have been minimally trimmed. London : Printed for the Author and for F C and J Rivington, 1806 A fair set of the final 6 volumes of Edward Donovan's beautiful work, with 216 hand coloured plates. Donovan issued the first 10 volumes in parts between 1792 and 1801. He viewed the work as finished, issuing a new title, contents pages and advert. He decided to restart the work issuing Vol XI 5 years later and completing Vol XVI in 1813. This set is in largely contemporary full leather bindings with raised bands, gilt decorative compartments, title and volume labels to spine. The boards have a delicate scroll-type decoration around the edges. All the volumes have wear to corners and edges and have varying degrees of wear to spine joints and ends. Board surfaces have some scuffing. Marbled endpapers. All volumes are complete, with 36 plates per volume. London : Printed by John Darby for Richard Chiswell, and Robert Clavell, 1669 A very good copy of the 1st edition of Johann Shroder's work in English, translated by William Rowland. An extremely scarce work. Johann Shroder (1600-1664) was a German physician and pharmacologist and is credited as the first person to recognise arsenic as an element - producing it by heating its oxide in 1649. This work was published in Latin in 1662. This copy has been recently rebound in half leather with marbled boards. The spine has gilt lined raised bands and titles. New endpapers have been added. London : The Fabian, 1681 A poor to fair copy of this scarce work by William Drummond of Hawthornden. Drummond was a Scottish poet and it is said that this work emerged from his researches into his family history. The binding is in serious need of repair and it lacks the frontispiece, original title and the 5 further plates. The binding is contemporary full calf with blind ruled lines to boards. The front board is detached and the back board is loose. The spine has loss to top and bottom and both boards have damage to a corner. Internally, the front free endpaper has been used to provide an old hand-written copy of the title page, which is missing, along with the frontispiece. The binding is sound but with wear at the spine and general discolouration and some cloth bubbling. Light indentation to sides of boards ? from being bound in string bundle. Internally has title page with blind stamp of University of Aberdeen Natural History Dept; 2 plain plates; errata and text including Addenda, Notes and Index 351pp. Probably lacking half title. The endpapers are very spotty and the text pages have light toning - more so at the beginning of the work. However, some text is unopened and it is in very clean condition.

London: Printed by Richard Tayor for the Author, 1837 A good copy of the 1st edition in the original cloth binding with 2 folding maps at the rear. Robert Dunn titles himself as an 'animal-preserver' - which, sadly, does not mean that he was a conservationist. The book is a full account of his travels and the various species that he encountered and then shot (and presumably stuffed when he was back home). The binding is complete and sound, with pulling to spine ends, bumped corners and some staining to the front board. There are the remains of a paper title label to the spine. Internally the original endpapers are present with 2 old signatures at the fep which has some light marking at the bottom. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1816 A very good 3 volume set in part contemporary half leather binding with 240 plates of which 237 are hand coloured. Duppa (1770-1831) was draughtsman and writer who authored a wide range of works. The bindings have newer spines with raised bands and author and title labels. The boards are marbled and retain their original corners. The spines have become sunned but are sound; corners and edges with wear and varying degrees of surface loss. The books do not lie completely flat when opened. Internally the endpapers are marbled matching the boards. They have the bookplate of Gloria Rollinson.
