Description:
[Np], March 1984.. Three leaves, quarto. Original typescript, heavily revised in type, ink and pencil. Unsigned. Very good in sleeves in labeled term paper binder. Successive, extensively revised typescripts of a brief anecdote about his meeting with Neville Mariner and discussion with him about Mozart's letters, functioning as diaries. The first and third leaves present the most substantial drafts of the text, whereas the second leaf includes two heavily revised forms of the first paragraph. There is a curious fragmented echo of some points here in Dawson's short story, "Dark Blue," collected in WILL SHE UNDERSTAND (1988).

Description:
Grove Mill House, Watford, 25 August [1857].. 4pp. on folded octavo lettersheet, accompanied by the original envelope. A few small foxmarks or tea stains, envelope ragged from opening, otherwise very good. A good literary letter from the Irish poet and critic to the Chevalier de Chatelain, translator and compiler of the five volume collection, BEAUTÉS DE LA POÉSIE ANGLAISE (1860-72). Perhaps in response to receiving translations of his own work, de Vere writes: "Pray accept my best thanks for your kindness in sending me your two translations. So far as I may venture to judge, they are both of them admirably done; nor could the special difficulties which belong to translation have been met, or more successfully overcome." De Vere adds a long postscript, sending his "warmest thanks for the two volumes you so kindly sent me ... I am particularly glad that that beautiful poem 'Evangeline' should be presented to French readers - I am still more so that Chaucer should become known in France ... he… Read More

The author's notes for the poem occupy the last forty pages of the text. Delille was an accomplished translator, notably of Virgil and Milton. His descriptive poem on the formal garden was popular as well in England, encompassing as it does descriptions of several of distinguished gardens across the channel, and this expanded text saw London printings almost immediately, and a number of deluxe/illustrated… Read More
