Vignette on the title pages; engraved headpieces, tailpieces, and initials. Lacking an engraved frontispiece, else collates complete. Vol. I: [22], 550, [26] pp. Vol. II: [8], 603, [33] pp. Front joints discretely repaired by a conservator, with japanese tissue; clear tape reinforcing the front hinge of Volume II; contemporary owners' names in ink on the front endpapers and flyleaf; some shelfwear to the leather binding and minor creasing to the spine. Full calf with red leather labels on the spines, and double rules in blind on the boards. All edges speckled in red and black. Very Good binding.

Very Good binding. 8vo.; in full speckled calf, with a blank spine; 164 pages.~~This follows the 1704 Second Edition; the next edition in 1708 had a supplement, "A Word to the Ladies". The book was in its Tenth Edition by 1731.~~William Darrell was a Jesuit. amd was procurator of the province in Paris. He was prefect of studies in the college of St. Omer in 1696, and subsequently fillege the same office at Liege. He was also professor casuistry at Liege, and rector of the college from 1708 to 1712. In 1712 he again became procurator of the Province in Paris. He died at St. Omer in 1721. Very Good binding.

Lacking endpapers; pencil notations on the pastedowns. Minor stain to the top corner of the textblock, not affecting the text. 20th century rebinding, with a note on the laid-in bookbinder's card: "see French's Bookbinding in America for this type of binding." This is likely referring to "Bookbindings in the Young Republic: Plain Bindings of the Period," pp. 90-92. In this section, the author states that many schoolbooks and other ordinary, utilitarian bound works used no ornamentation whatever, and "the most inexpensive and durable materials available." The Virginia Evangelical and Literary Magazine was issued for about 10 years, beginning in January 1818 and concluding with a final issue in December 1828. John Holt Rice edited it, with the assistance of Moses Hoge, John D. Blair, and George Baxter.
