Roberts is called the Father of Canadian Poetry, due to his own works and the supportive relation he maintained with many major Canadian poets in their early years. Publisher's advertisements at the front, listing nine titles. Complete, with portrait frontispiece, tissue guard bound in; xii, 222 pp. Armorial bookplate of a Jefferson Wallace, Richmond, on the front pastedown; with his signature, dated 1929, on the front flyleaf. Else no marks of any kind. Minor loss to the top of the spine; wear to the joints; spots of scuffing to the edges of the boards. Lucian of Samosata, the second century Syrian satirist, was best known for his extensive use of sarcasm to ridicule superstitious and religious beliefs. Text in French. Vignette on the title pages; engraved headpieces, tailpieces, and initials. Lacking an engraved frontispiece, else collates complete. Vol. I: [22], 550, [26] pp. Vol. II: [8], 603, [33] pp. Front joints discretely repaired by a conservator, with japanese tissue; clear tape reinforcing the front hinge of Volume II; contemporary owners' names in ink on the front endpapers and flyleaf; some shelfwear to the leather binding and minor creasing to the spine. Full calf with red leather labels on the spines, and double rules in blind on the boards. All edges speckled in red and black. Very Good binding.

Good binding. 8vo.; in the publisher's black embossed cloth, with titling and decorations in oranges; 296 pages; the binding has silverfishing; the previous owner penned her name several times on the front endpaper.~~Krick considers this novel to be "insubstantial" and indeed it seems to be: a nice older woman unfolds here experiences for the girl to prepare her for "the foibles and confusing destinies of life."~~The author was, among other things, Superintendent of the Confederate Woman's Home in Austin, Texas. (Krick 95). Good binding.

Toning and scattered foxing to the text. Surface wear, joint wear, and small spots of staining to the binding. Full calf with a red leather label. Good binding.

Very Good binding. 8vo.; in full speckled calf, with a blank spine; 164 pages.~~This follows the 1704 Second Edition; the next edition in 1708 had a supplement, "A Word to the Ladies". The book was in its Tenth Edition by 1731.~~William Darrell was a Jesuit. amd was procurator of the province in Paris. He was prefect of studies in the college of St. Omer in 1696, and subsequently fillege the same office at Liege. He was also professor casuistry at Liege, and rector of the college from 1708 to 1712. In 1712 he again became procurator of the Province in Paris. He died at St. Omer in 1721. Very Good binding.

This is likely referring to "Bookbindings in the Young Republic: Plain Bindings of the Period," pp. 90-92. In this section, the author states that many schoolbooks and other ordinary, utilitarian bound works used no ornamentation whatever, and "the most inexpensive and durable materials available." The Virginia Evangelical and Literary Magazine was issued for about 10 years, beginning in January 1818 and concluding with a final issue in December 1828. John Holt Rice edited it, with the assistance of Moses Hoge, John D. Blair, and George Baxter. Many, if not most, articles were submitted anonymously or under pseudonyms -- Timothius, Acadmemicus, and the like. ~~The 10 issues are Volume II, No. 1, January 1819; No 2, February 1819 [Note this issue has corner loss to a number of leaves affecting a few letters of type--the seems almost certainly the result of a mouse looking for a meal]; No. 4, April 1819 [Note one leaf has a 3" closed tear]; No. 5, May 1819, contains images of the Idols of Pomare; No. 6, June 1819; No. 7, July 1816 contains "Thoughts on Slavery": "All immediate emancipation is out of the question, and perhaps domestic emancipation will always be impracticable", though the magazine appears to favor the rightness of teaching slaves… Read More

(7 1/2" x 5 1/8"); in the publisher's decorative cloth binding; 267 pages; the front hinge is cracked, but this is a reasonably bright copy with no ownership marks or other writing in the book.~~The tale is based on an 1825 murder in Frankfort, Kentucky and its sequel -- the assassination of Colonel Solomon P. Sharp in his home, and the subsequent hanging of Jeroboam O. Beauchamp for the crime (and the suicide of his wife). (Krick 396). Very Good binding.
