Description:
New York: Willis Locker & Owens 1986, 1986. First edition. 8vo. 210pp, illustrated throughout. Fine in red cloth in a fine printed slipcase. This edition comes complete with a small portfolio of six large postcard sized prints - numbered 29/125 (Although whether this refers to the work as a whole or simply the portfolio is unclear). The culture of samizdat was the only way to disseminate any artistic, cultural or political opinion that went against Soviet orthodoxy and this book is an overview of that culture. In fact, the publishers of this work printed this note in the book: "All materials by artists presently living in Russia have been printed without their permission, so that they bear no legal responsibility".

Description:
New York: Harper and Row 1972, 1972. First edition, hardcover. 42 large colour plates taken in Paris. Inscribed to his friend John G. Morris: "16th August '73. For John, Good Luck with your day dreams! Dave". This book is the result of Duncan's experimentation with the use of prisms and other lens effects to achieve "a new camera idiom". The result is a striking set of images. Contents good, dust jacket with some damage and discolouration. David Douglas Duncan This book was a major departure for Duncan. He is best known as one of the foremost photojournalists of the twentieth century and amongst its finest recorders of war, "Prismatics" shows Duncan breaking down and distorting the image, using the camera, not as "a direct conduit between what I saw and what I recorded" but as a way of creating, from clichéd views of Paris, a "new world". He is defamiliarising the familiar. John G. Morris (born in 1916) is probably the most… Read More

Description:
[Vienna]: [widow of Alberti for T.Mollo] [1799], 1799. Broadsheet (65 x 48 cm). Contemporary, probably original, pink cloth backing marbled boards. With fifty numbered woodcuts on forty three sheets, the first five sheets comprising the legend by Stabius, the last sheet also containing three woodcut inscriptions numbered fifty one to fifty three, the entire design made up from 174 original blocks and eighteen etchings by Bartsch on three sheets. Some splitting of cloth at joints but holding firm, front free endpaper renewed and helping reinforce front inner hinge, a few trivial marks at corners, but an excellent copy, clean, and fresh, with clear impressions printed on strong laid paper. Fourth impression of Dürer's Ehrenpforte, one of the great giant woodcuts of the Renaissance, printed from the original sixteenth-century blocks under the supervision of Adam Bartsch. The blocks are now preserved at the Albertina Museum, Vienna. The work was intended for assembly as a gigantic wall print… Read More

London: James R. Osgood, McIlvaine & Co. 1896. 8vo. 182x140mm. pp. [iv], 381, [1], [2pp adverts]. Bound by Bayntun in black half morocco, pale blue linen covered boards, spine decorated and letter in gilt. Top edge gilt. The original navy blue cloth cover with gilt vignette has been pasted to the front pastedown. The binding is in excellent condition. Internally fine but with some slight staining to the fore-edge caused by the gilding to the top-edge. Illustrated by du Maurier who, before becoming a novelist was a successful cartoonist for Punch. His cartoon "True Humility" gives us the expression "Curate's Egg" although du Maurier plagiarised this from another magazine ("Judy") which run a similar cartoon with the same joke six months earlier. Whether du Maurier's novels are plagiarised we cannot say. Whether they are "curate's eggs" is another matter. du Maurier's three novels published in this uniform edition are offered here as a set of three, not sold individually.

Dust jacket with some wear and small tears on spine and upper edges. Contents near fine, jacket very good. Inscribed by Duncan to his friend the photo-editor John G Morris. "November 1969. For John - Happy Thanksgiving and Super Saludos - Dave". This is a superb photographic record of the 1968 Conventions. Near Fine/Very Good David Douglas Duncan John G. Morris (born in 1916) is probably the most celebrated living photo-editor. He worked with many of the finest photographers - Robert Capa, Cartier-Bresson and W. Eugene Smith. As the London Picture Editor of "Life" during WWII, he was responsible for editing and publishing Capa's coverage of D-Day. Later, Morris became the Picture Editor of "Ladies Home Journal", Executive Editor of Magnum Photos, and Picture Editor of The New York Times. He still tours the world… Read More
