Hidden Faces was originally written in French in 1943, two years after Dali had published his autobiography to great success. Chevalier, a professor at Berkeley University, spent several weeks with Dalí, translating directly into English as Dalí wrote. The novel was completed in two weeks on the estate of the Marquis de Cuevas in Franconia, a mansion in the mountains of New Hampshire next to the Canadian border. The plates herein mostly non-published, the photographer William McKillup with his address, 939 8th Ave noted in pencil on front free endpaper. William McKillop (1878-1937) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He began his art studies in 1904 at the St. Louis Art School. He later studied in Paris at the Academy Julian under Jean Paul Laurens and at the Academy of Beaux Arts under Edward Laurent. Several of his paintings were exhibited at the Paris Salon. In 1913 he returned to the United States and established a studio. Two plates signed by Davies on the mount. Davies was the principal organizer of the legendary 1913 Armory Show. A good portion of the black and white plates are figures of nude women, Binder worn at corners, but solid.
