Description:
1893. London: Elkin Mathews & John Lane, 1893. 2 pp undated ads. Original dark blue cloth. First Edition, which according to the limitation page consisted of only 300 copies (though the book does not seem as scarce as that). The title comes from Davidson's membership in the Rhymers' Club (Yeats et al.), which met regularly at the Cheshire Cheese public-house on Fleet Street. This copy, complete with the errata slip, is in fine condition except for almost-imperceptible cover soil. Nelson 50; Krshnmrti 174.

Description:
1891. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1891. 8 pp undated ads. Original yellow printed wrappers. First Edition of Davis's first book (other than an 1884 wrappered piece written while he was a student at Lehigh). It was his newspaper story "Gallegher" that earned Davis the newspaper writer immediate fame; three of the ten tales also feature his character "Van Bibber," the man-about-town who would surface again in Davis's writings. Davis went on to become best-known as a major war correspondent in the Spanish-American War, the Second Boer War, and the First World War (during which he died suddenly, at age 51). This is a copy in yellow printed wrappers, printed on laid paper, with 8 pages of ads. Blanck says the first printing is on wove paper with only 8 pages of ads (rather than 8+4 pages), but he also says the first printing consisted of 1,000 copies on wove paper in cloth plus 3,032 on laid paper in wrappers (as here) -- but "no copy in printed wrappers has been located." Very good-plus… Read more

Description:
1870. With Illustrations. Boston: Fields, Osgood, & Co., 1870. Original green cloth. First American Edition, second issue with added material -- of the tale left unfinished at the time of Dickens's death in June 1870. In addition to DROOD, this second issue adds James T. Fields's introductory "Some Memories of Charles Dickens," plus Dickens's "George Silverman's Explanation," "Holiday Romance," "Sketches of Young Couples," "New Uncommercial Samples" plus "The Will of Charles Dickens." Since 1867, Ticknor & Fields (and then Fields Osgood) had been Dickens's authorized publisher in America; they had serialized DROOD in their weekly Every Saturday, and then published this book in early September. (Ticknor & Fields had specifically commissioned Dickens to write "Holiday Romance," so that it could appear in their children's periodical Our Young Folks in 1868.) Harper also serialized DROOD in a… Read more

Description:
1861. Works of Charles Dickens. Household Edition. [In Two Volumes.] Illustrated from Drawings by F.O.C. Darley and John Gilbert. New York: James G. Gregory, 1861. Original dark green cloth. Very early American Edition -- the first to deposit copies at the Library of Congress -- of one of Dickens's most-loved novels (being volumes of the "Household Edition"). There has been much controversy over which is the first American edition -- this edition by Gregory, or Peterson's edition. This Gregory edition was long regarded as the first American edition, but Walter Smith's 2012 bibliography of Dickens's American editions gives the nod to Peterson's, with considerable information on this controversy. In the meantime here is the brief known history... On November 15, 1860, Harper entered a copyright for the book, and then serialized the tale in Harper's Weekly beginning on November 24 and ending on August 3, 1861 (however, there is no book edition published by Harper in… Read more

Description:
1870. With Illustrations. Boston: Fields, Osgood, & Co., 1870. Original green cloth. First American Edition, second and usual issue with added material -- of the tale left unfinished at the time of Dickens's death in June 1870. The scarce earlier issue, withOUT the "Uncollected Pieces," was bound only in wrappers; furthermore, the subsequent additions are just that -- the text of DROOD is exactly the same in both issues. This has led some bibliographers to speculate that the two issues may be from the same printing, with only a change in the title page: Smith, noting that he could not find a publication date for the first issue, says "Perhaps such copies represent a prepublication state rather than an issue and were published simultaneously with copies which had the uncollected pieces...". The "Uncollected Pieces" consist of James T. Fields's introductory "Some Memories of Charles Dickens," plus Dickens's "George Silverman's… Read more

Description:
1860. An Extra Double Number of of All The Year Round. [New York: J. M. Emerson & Co., 1860.] Original self-wrappers, bound in at the rear of the February 1861 monthly issue, which has its own pale-yellow printed wrappers. First American Edition, "published simultaneously in London and New York " (according to the front wrapper) -- of the second of the nine extra Christmas numbers of All The Year Round. Dickens actually wrote only the first, second and fifth chapters of A MESSAGE FROM THE SEA, the remainder having been written by his son-in-law's brother, Wilkie Collins. This was the second of the nine extra Christmas number of All The Year Round, of which Dickens was the editor. This is the only one of the nine annual numbers to be illustrated -- having on page 5 a woodcut of the actual "message from the sea." This example has the 48-page Extra Christmas Number bound in at the rear of the February 1861 monthly issue (which includes the weekly issues of January). Included in those weekly issues… Read more

1859. London: Office of All The Year Round / Chapman & Hall, 1859-1867. [In nine volumes.] Original self-wrappers (first four) and blue printed wrappers (last five) -- as issued. First Editions of all nine "Extra Christmas Numbers" of this periodical that Charles Dickens founded, and edited for its nine years of existence. (Previously he had likewise founded Household Words, which likewise lasted nine years -- and which has nine Extra Christmas Numbers as well.) In addition to editing these tales, Dickens also wrote a portion of them -- specifically (per Eckel): Christmas 1859: THE HAUNTED HOUSE. Dickens wrote "The Mortals in the House," "The Ghost in Master B's Room," and "The Ghost in the Corner Room," as well as most of the other opening paragraphs. Christmas 1860: A MESSAGE FROM THE SEA. 1853. New York: Stringer & Townsend, 1853. Original greyish-pink printed wrappers. Early (first?) American edition of this the third of Dickens's nine "Extra Christmas Numbers" of his weekly periodical Household Words. This came out in London in December 1852, and then was published in America in early 1853 by several publishers (McElrath & Lord doing the authorized American issue of HhW, plus Harper, plus this effort). Dickens himself wrote only the first two stories -- "The Poor Relation's Story" and "The Child's Story." This copy includes the delicate original greyish-pink wrappers, and is in very good-plus condition (minor edge-wear, a few droplet-marks on some leaves within). Podeschi (Yale) B225.

Description:
1855. Two pages (1st and 3rd of conjoined leaves), on stationery with a faint blind-stamp at the upper corner. "Tavistock House, Wednesday Tenth January 1855." The text of Dickens's letter (following "Dear Sir") is: I hope the opportunity you deserve will present itself naturally before very long. I cannot make an express appointment just now, as I am quite uncertain whether I may be called out of town tomorrow or next day, with Charles, or on the business of placing him in some house of commerce. Besides which, I have, the Christmas holidays being over, a fortnight's arrear of appointments to clear off. Your letter required no apology and is very agreeably done. Faithfully yours [signed] Charles Dickens. Francesco Berger (1834-1933) born in London of Italian and German parentage, as a teen in 1848 traveled to Trieste (his father's home city), returning to England in 1855. He was trained as a pianist and composer, and would go on to be a professor at the Royal Academy of Music, and the 27-year… Read more

Original blind-stamped dark brown cloth with gilt spine vignette. First American Combined (and first American Illustrated) Edition -- later (1841) printing. The first and second series of SKETCHES BY BOZ were published in 1836-1837 first in the UK and soon after by Carey Lea & Blanchard of Philadelphia. Following that, on both sides of the Atlantic the two series were combined, with plates by Cruikshank, and issued first in monthly parts (in 1838-1839) and then in cloth in 1839; this is Lea & Blanchard's second printing of that 1839 combined edition. This copy is in the original cloth, and is in very good condition (a bit of wear at the spine ends, one short marginal tear on a plate). Description:
1860. [the very scarce first issue] [London: St. Luke's Hospital, 1860.] Original pale mauve wrappers. First Edition, first issue -- with the final paragraph in the same type as the rest of the text (and not in bold type), with the wrapper mauve (and not pink -- though all are today faded), with the front cover title followed by a period (not by a comma), and with the front cover border decorative on all sides (not just at the corners). Dickens describes the wretched conditions inside St. Luke's Hospital ("established in 1751, for the treatment and care of lunatics"), and in particular the "very sad and touching spectacle" of the annual Christmas Ball there (dancing around the Christmas tree). He actually wrote the original piece in 1852, at which time it appeared in his Household Words (Dickens's authorship was questioned until 1913, when the original manuscript -- in his hand -- turned up). It is here published in book form for the first time, eight years later,… Read more

1880. Now First Collected. New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1880. 6 pp undated ads (plus endpaper ads). Original cream cloth decorated in black. First American Edition, issued as No. 114 in Holt's "Leisure Hour Series." THE MUDFOG PAPERS had originally appeared in America in the 1830s in the American Bentley's Miscellany, and one of them, "The Public Life of Mr. Tulrumble," was included in an 1837 Lea & Blanchard collection of sketches; the other papers' first appearance in book form was as an appendix to Mackenzie's LIFE OF DICKENS (Philadelphia 1870). It was not until 1880, however, that THE MUDFOG PAPERS were published as a separate book (by Bentley in England and by Holt in America). This is a very good-plus copy, a little soiled (as always with these cream-colored "Leisure Hour" volumes). Podeschi (Yale) D87.

Description:
1846. A Love Story. London: Bradbury & Evans, 1846. 2 pp undated ads. Original red cloth pictorially decorated in gilt. First Edition of the fourth of Dickens's five illustrated Christmas books -- following A CHRISTMAS CAROL, THE CHIMES, and THE CRICKET ON THE HEARTH, and preceding THE HAUNTED MAN. This is an unusual tale in which two sisters love the same man, both ultimately settling in with him (though only one is married to him) -- according to Thackeray "a wretched affair." It is in fact quite autobiographical: Dickens loved Mary Hogarth, married her sister Catherine, and then was happy to have his household run by their sister Georgina. This copy has the vignette title page in the fourth and usual state (Todd's state E1), with an angel holding the banner and with no publisher's imprint. In our experience, at least 90% and perhaps 95% of the copies encountered are of this state. This is a bright, attractive copy, just about fine, with only the faintest hint of wear at the very tips… Read more

Description:
1853. [in the primary cloth binding] With Illustrations by H[ablot]. K. Browne. London: Bradbury and Evans, 1853. Original blind-stamped olive green cloth, all page edges gilt. First Edition in book form (following issuance in 20-in-19 monthly parts), of Dickens's famous novel that attacks Chancery, the London legal system. Included are forty plates by "Phiz," of which ten are "dark plates" made possible by a new procedure. This copy is still in the original cloth binding -- the primary one, with blind-stamping that includes 16 little beads around each cover's outer margin. (An ad in the final serial part urged customers to either (a) buy the book in this binding for one guinea (£1/1s/0d), or (b) take their serial parts to "their Booksellers" to arrange for the parts to be bound up in this binding for 1s/6d. This copy -- bound without the half-title and of course without all the ads -- is from the latter option, as one can see the parts' stab-holes; the owner of these parts paid extra, though,… Read more

1836. Containing a Faithful Record of the Perambulations, Perils, Travels, Adventures and Sporting Transactions of the Corresponding Members. Edited by "Boz." With Illustrations. [20-in-19 monthly serial parts.] London: Chapman & Hall, 1836-1837. Original light green pictorial wrappers. First Edition, in the original 20-in-19 monthly serial parts, issued from April 1836 through November 1837. This was Dickens's first novel, and his first book to appear in monthly serial parts; the sketches that would become SKETCHES BY BOZ appeared first in periodicals, then in two-plus-one volumes in 1836-1837, and finally (once Chapman & Hall took over) in serial parts in 1837-1839. PICKWICK in parts is extremely complex bibliographically, mainly for two reasons both of which came to a head with the fourth part. Dickens at the time was essentially unknown (even as "Boz"), because all he had written were the above sketches, not yet in book or serial form; in fact C&H decided to publish PICKWICK only because… Read more

Description:
1854. [in Two Volumes.] Boston: Jenks, Hickling & Swan, 1854. Original blind-stamped dark brown cloth with gilt-decorated spines. Early American edition, just possibly the first complete one. Since Harper published the two volumes of its edition separately in March 1853 and in March 1854 (so dated on the title pages), it is considered to be the first American edition. The date in 1854 when these two Boston volumes were published is unknown, so it is possible that this two-volume Boston edition came out earlier in 1854 than Harper's second volume. Jenks Hickling & Swan was a very "fluid" enterprise at the time, such that their 1856 and 1857 two-volumes-in-one printings would be by Hickling Swan & Brown, and their 1861 two-in-one printing would be by Swan Brewer & Tileston. This set is in very good-plus condition (a few small holes in the cloth, mainly at extremities or at joints); the gilt on the spines is unusually bright. Description:
1877. A Farce in One Act. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1877. Original terra-cotta cloth decorated in black. First "Collectible" Edition of this play first performed in 1851. We say first "collectible" because there are only four known copies of the original 1851 pamphlet; supposedly a fifth, from which Osgood printed this edition, was destroyed in the Boston fire of 1879. This is a volume in the publisher's "Vest Pocket Series," so named for its diminutive size (a second Dickens "comic burletta" was published in this series the same year -- IS SHE HIS WIFE?). This copy is terra-cotta in color; others are green, without priority. It is a bright, near-fine copy (minor rubbing at the tips, one small mark on the fore-edge of the leaves) -- quite uncommon in this condition. Eckel pp 64-5.

Description:
1850. This is a complete set Dickens's annual "Extra Christmas Numbers" -- all nine of HOUSEHOLD WORDS, followed by all nine of ALL THE YEAR ROUND. London: Dec. 1850 - Dec. 1858 and Dec. 1859 - Dec. 1867. Original self-wrappers (first 13 numbers) and original blue printed wrappers (last five numbers) -- as issued. First Editions of all eighteen pieces. Dickens was the editor (or "conductor") of both of these periodicals -- one rising out of the ashes of the other -- but he also wrote at least part of the Christmas story in each of these eighteen numbers. The stories in HOUSEHOLD WORDS are: 1850 ("A Christmas Tree" is by CD) 1851 ("What Christmas is, as we Grow Older" is by CD) 1852 A ROUND OF STORIES ("The Poor Relation's Story" and "The Child's Story" are by CD) 1853 ANOTHER ROUND OF STORIES ("The Schoolboy's Story" and "Nobody's Story" are by CD) 1854 THE SEVEN POOR TRAVELLERS ("The First Poor Traveller" and "The Road" are by CD) 1855 THE HOLLY-TREE INN ("The Guest," "The Boots" and "The… Read more
