Da Costa (1863-1933) studied medicine at Jefferson Medical College, where he ultimately became the first Samuel D. Gross Professor of Surgery. The present work is the first collection of his poems, including The Army of despair, The Skeleton, The Nurse, and Human life. Da Costa was well known for his medical writings as well as his poetry.

Contemporary calf; bottom edge chipped, interior browned and spotted, a few tears, and the name Jesse Thompson written over preliminary leaves, usual for a much-used textbook. Later (stereotype) edition of an extremely popular textbook. The text covers the different branches of arithmetic, computation of money, currencies, tables of compound interest, weight and measures, and other transactions for business.

Three separate volumes. All three books are signed by Charles Dana, who has also crossed out his brother John Dana's name on the title page. All three with the book plate of the Library of the Medical Society of King's County; the first title also with the bookplate of Horace himself.

With the bookplate of Arnold Thackray over that of the Essex Institute. First edition. This valuable textbook is based on the author's lectures given at Dartmouth College, which covered chemical philosophy and theory, chemistry of organic and inorganic substances, and vegetable and animal chemistry. Dana (1793-1827) was a physician and professor of chemistry. He studied in London under the brilliant theorist Friedrich Accum.

In these investigations, Darwin crosses a "long styled" individual with another long styled flower to produce a comparatively infertile primrose, illustrating a degree of sterility within the limits of a single species comparable to that produced in the crossing of distinct species. Darwin's work on heterostyled plants bears on one of the most difficult points in the statement of the case for evolution, the sterility of interspecific crosses and of hybrids. Darwin writes that the time involved in this research gave him more pleasure than almost any other. Freeman, 1296.

By comparing the physiological and psychological aspects of man and ape, he fills in what had been merely suggested in the Origin: that man's ancestor, if still alive today, would be classified among the primates and on a lower scale than the apes. The last chapter is an added essay on sexual selection, the superior chances of mating that some individuals of one sex have over their rivals. The essay ends with the famous and often misquoted statement, "Man still bears in his bodily frame the indelible stamp of his lowly origin." "The word 'evolution' occurs, for the first time in any of Darwin's works, on page 2 of the first volume of the first edition" (Freeman, p.129).
