Remains from early binding on the spine; early tidelines to the inner and top margin of many leaves; occasional spotting/toning. This is the fourth edition following the first publication in 1672. It is a spirited satire on Hobbes's Humane Nature and one that John Bowle calls "the most entertaining . . . . and one of the most effective of all the [17th century] attacks on Hobbes" (Hobbes and his Critics. London: 1969. p. 134). Uncommon. ESTC R31400.

In publisher's cloth with title in gold on the spine; lacking the dust jacket. Spine and board edges are just a trifle sunned; some rippling to the cloth; contents clean. Earle published this work anonymously but his authorship was soon well known. The work fits well into "the craze for characters--pithy, Ironic, pen portraits of social and moral types, often with a didactic moral purpose" that was prominent in the 1620s and 30s (ODNB). This edition reprints the text from the firt completed edition of 1633. Chanticleer 55.

Printed in black Cloister Lightface type with red shoulder notes. A fairly bright copy with limited shelfwear including some spotting to the spine and a bumped bottom corner on the front boards; contents are clean but for some very occasional light spotting; the publisher issued slipcase is worn, sunned, and stained and the spine piece, while present, is separated. The slipcase is often found battered when present. Nevertheless, a stately edition of Emerson's essays designed and printed by one of the country's foremost printers. Bookplate of Frederick Hyde on the front pastedown. Quatro-Millenary 60; Ransom 60.
