Description:
Boston: Printed by John Foster, 1676. FIRST EDITION. 190 x 138 mm. (7 1/2 x 5 3/4"). [36] leaves. New retrospective sheepskin. In a very good cloth clamshell box with spine label. Evans 214: Howe 755; Sabin I, 499-500. ◆Title laid down and with small area of discoloration (where an ownership inscription has been effaced?), text carelessly trimmed by the original binder, leaving leaves cut close at head, with loss of headline and pagination, often grazing the first line of text and impacting its legibility on about 10 pages (but with lower margin quite ample), final opening somewhat yellowed and soiled, light dampstain on a handful of leaves. With obvious defects (and which 17th century American imprint doesn't have them?), but worth having as a rare and important book in the history of printing in America. This is an extremely rare copy of one of the earliest books from the press of the first printer in Boston, issued in just the second year of printing in that city. The text is a sermon preached… Read More

s.l.: s.n. Printed Anno Domini, 1658. FIRST EDITION. 190 x 135 mm. (7 1/2 x 5 3/8"). 3 p.l., 14 pp. (complete). 20th century vellum-backed marbled boards, flat spine with vertical titling. Front pastedown with bookplate of the Fox Pointe Collection. Wing P-2842B; ESTC R207754. ◆Text lightly washed and pressed (but still crisp), faint foxing to lower edge of title page, otherwise a fine, fresh copy in an unworn binding. Written by an opinionated English cleric, this is an extraordinarily rare pamphlet proposing an unusual fund to support young 17th century scholars. According to DNB, the scheme outlined in the present work was meant "to support the university studies of young men of promise seeking entry into the ministry." The plan "was approved by John Worthington and Anthony Tuckney, and had the support also of John Arrowsmith DD, Ralph Cudworth, William Dillingham DD, and Benjamin Whichcote. The fund raised about £900, and it appears that William Sherlock, afterwards dean of St Paul's,… Read More

Printer's device on title page. With Greek inscription in ink on title page, occasional ink marginalia, and with a page of inked notes written in Latin in an early hand on blank verso of final leaf. Leaf *3r with an inexpert but endearing pen-and-ink drawing of a rider on a galloping horse below the dedication, with some pencilled embellishments around it; A4r with an ink-drawn small face in one margin. (7 3/8 x 4 3/4"). 3 p.l., xli, [1], 183, [1] pp. Contemporary red goatskin, intricately gilt, elongated filigree panel on front and back cover, raised bands, heavily gilt spine, marbled pastedowns, all edges gilt. A Large Paper Copy printed on special thick paper. Front pastedown with bookplate of Robert S. Pirie. Wing H-2999. ◆Color of leather slightly variable, corners a bit bumped and rubbed, trivial wear elsewhere, but the unrestored binding solid and certainly pleasing, and AN EXCEPTIONALLY FINE COPY INTERNALLY, the text as bright, clean, and fresh as one could hope for, with particularly ample margins. Although its text is of some interest to the understanding of English history, this work does not typically command great antiquarian value, but when a copy like the present one--in contemporary red morocco and in remarkably fine condition--turns up, the book is considerably more desirable than usual. Frankfurt: Christian Egenolphus, 1535. FIRST EDITION. 197 x 127 mm. (7 3/4 x 5"). 40, [4] leaves. Part I, only, of two. . Modern printed paper boards with blue floral pattern. WITH 226 BOTANICAL WOODCUTS, ALL WITH BEAUTIFUL CONTEMPORARY HAND COLORING. Two leaves with pencilled marginalia. Nissen BBI 2344; Fairfax Murray 196; Pritzel 2626 (1536 printing); Adams H-293. Not in Hunt. ◆A couple of minor marginal stains, otherwise AN EXTREMELY FINE COPY, clean, crisp, and bright with saturated colors, in an unworn binding. This is an outstanding copy, with notably pleasing hand coloring, of printer Christian Egenolph's first small format--and thus extremely practical--herbal, one of the most important and now highly sought-after early editions of its kind. The text that appears here, in addition to the title and index, is the name of each plant, given in Latin (in roman type) and German (in gothic type). The woodcuts show us the entire plant, from roots to bloom, and from two to five specimens are… Read More

Baker & Ross F8 (prospectus for deluxe edition). ◆A sprinkling of very faint brown spots to tail edge of upper board, a couple of plates with trivial wrinkles or creases, but AN EXTREMELY FINE COPY, quite clean, fresh, and bright inside and out, with excellent impressions of the plates. This is an outstanding copy of an attractive portfolio containing a suite of plates created for a deluxe edition of the works of George Eliot produced by Estes and Lauriat. Very attractive late 19th century polished calf by Riviere & Son (stamp-signed on verso of front free endpaper), covers with triple gilt fillet border, rosettes at corners, raised bands, spines gilt in compartments with vase of flowers at center surrounded by small tools, leafy sprays at corners, one red and one green morocco label, turn-ins with floral gilt roll, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. Front pastedowns with morocco bookplate of Robert Hoe. Baker & Ross A8.1. ◆A hint of sunning to spines and to half-inch at head of rear cover of volume I, but AN ESPECIALLY FINE SET--the text clean, fresh, and bright, and the bindings unworn. This is the handsomely bound Robert Hoe copy of a celebrated three-decker centering on a political election during the Reform Bill controversies of the 1830s.
