Cranbrook, Kent, 1971.. 7 leaves. Carbon typescript, on rectos only, with light corrections, signed in full at conclusion. Very good. The poet's summary of Eliot's career, talent and achievement, accompanied by an a.l.s., "13 viii 71," one page, octavo, in response to a solicitation of a contribution to APEX ONE magazine, and forwarding the essay. Accompanied by a copy of the issue in which it appeared, whole #2, Feb. 1974.

Published as the twelfth volume in the Crown Octavo series. Copy #249 of three hundred numbered copies, in addition to twenty-six lettered copies for presentation, all signed by the author. Spine somewhat sunned, gilt lettering with a slight patina, boards faintly dust-soiled, small bump toward crown of spine, but a very good, clean copy, without the usual foxing to the verso of the frontis. Lacking the plain tan paper shipping wrapper. First edition of Eliot's anonymously published second book, superintended by John Quinn as a promotional for LUSTRA. According to Gallup, one of one thousand copies printed -- however, the frequency with which copies turn up - particularly in light of the attrition rate one would expect for a book so delicate - can't help but suggest the edition may have possibly been a bit larger. One of three hundred and fifty numbered copies, printed on Zanders handmade paper and specially bound. Published as Ariel Poem 8. Unlike the majority of titles in the Ariel Poems, the deluxe issue of this title was not issued signed by Eliot. GALLUP A9b.

First edition, third binding, with the 8pp. Methuen catalogue bound at the end. Gallup suggests that copies of the original sheets, in this binding, were distributed not earlier than January 1924. First Faber printing of the first title, first separate edition of the second title, and first editions of the latter two titles. The fourth title is in the stapled binding (rather than sewn). Kent bookplate on pastedown concealed in large part by jacket flap, very slight tanning, otherwise very near fine in very good or better dust jacket. Corrected impression of the first U.S. edition. Due to poor imposition of the formes during printing, the first impression was deemed faulty and only 788 copies were distributed in order to fulfill copyright and other obligations; the remaining 3377 copies were destroyed. An additional impression (with neither 'first edition' nor the characteristic sequence of letters and numbers on the verso of the title) was prepared and totaled 3500 copies. The book was then reprinted again without alteration; this copy is in an example of the somewhat later dust jacket, priced $2.50 (rather than $2), and with the Nobel Prize notice and THE COCKTAIL PARTY leading the nine titles on the rear panel. Cambridge: Harvard Film Service, [ca. 1934].. 12" 78 rpm phonograph record, enclosed in plain contemporary sleeve. Signs of having been played, with a few light surface rubs, but very good or better. The sleeve has a note ('A-') on one panel. The first phonograph recording by Eliot cited by Gallup, but at slight variance due to the assertion of having been produced by the Harvard Film Service. Gallup's entry explicitly cites Harvard University Press. This copy bears the numbers "P-990 SS 5052" and "P991 SS5053." GALLUP E5a.
