Little Joe and his friend Tim, both of whom work in the mill, find a new home with a Mrs. Brett, thanks to their fragarian skills. The work was first published in London in 1867 by Seeley, Jackson, and Halliday (copy in V&A), followed by another edition or reprint in 1868 (BL). A Paris, Chez Francois Le Breton..., 1725. 3 volumes. 12mo, 165 x 100 mms., pp. [xxxviii], 324; [ii], 50, [16], 75 [76 Privilege], [x], 70, [8], 91 [92 Privilege], [6], 64, 4, 385 - 391[ 392 blank]; [ii], 86, [6], 99 - 138, [20], 100, [12], 99 [100 blank], finely bound in contemporary French mottled calf, spines ornately gilt in compartments, red leather label; very slight loss of gilt on spines, corners slightly worn, but an attractive set. Boursault (1638 - 1701) seems to have had more success with his two tragedies, Germanicus and Marie Stuart than with his other works. The latter work may be an instance of the so-called "auld alliance" between France and Scotland. Mary Stewart (1542 - 1587), Queen of Scots, spent 14 years in France, and her attempt to gain the throne of England, with all its permutations and her eventual execution, generated a vast quantity of literary and other artistic representations. Boursault's play was first performed in 1684, but it is unlikely to have… Read More

Description:
London: Printed by J. Nichols, Printer to the Society, 1785. 4to, 258 x 200 mms., pp. [ii], 5 [6 blank], folding engraved plate, 450 x 320 mms., recently recased in quarter calf, marbled boards. A very good copy. The antiquary Edmond Turnor (1755?-1829), was born into a family with a large estate in Lincolnshire, which enabled him to pursue his interests in antiquities, publishing an account of sculptures and paintings in Guildhall in London, even before he went to university. After finishing a B. A. and an M. S. at Trinity College, Cambridge, he embarked upon the "Grand Tour," when he saw, among other ruins, the castle at Rouen, called Le Château du Vieux Palais. After presenting this paper at a meeting of the Society of Antiquaries in 1784, He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1786 and continued for the rest of his life to indulge his passion for antiquarian pursuits. ESTC T109986 locates copies in BL and Ripley Castle Library. OCLC adds a copy in NLS. I was… Read More

The self-taught mathematician Edmund Stone (1700 - 1768) also learned Latin and Greek in order to read various mathematical works. He published his New Mathematical Dictionary in 1726; this second edition was published two years before he was made a Fellow of the Royal Society. Stone's work continued to be of interest to mathematicians throughout the 18th century and into the 19th; for literary scholars, its importance lies in its function as a source used by Dr. Johnson in compiling his Dictionary of the English Language (1755). Description:
London: Printed by John Olive: Sold by J. Buckland...andJ. Ward..., 1757. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 8vo, pp. vii [viii blank], 319 [320 blank], including half-title, recent half calf, marbled boards, red morocco label. A very good copy. Mr. Barnard's title suggests a philosophical treatise, with Aristotle perhaps to the foreground. In fact, the text is mostly in verse, including two plays, The Somewhat and Edward VI in blank verse. Various sources do not give birth and death dates, only that he flourished c. 1741 - 1757. The headmaster and later provost of Eton, Edward Barnard (1717 - 1781) might seem to be a possible candidate for authorship. ODNB doesn't mention any publications by Barnard. The Prologue to Edward VI is preceded by "Disadvantages Relating to the following Entertainment," which clearly indicates that the play wasw written to be performed by "The Young." King Edward VI (1537 - 1553) effectively became King at the age of ten, when Henrv VIII died… Read More

He was also MP of Quarn Hall. Capell's edition was one of the first books printed in England to omit catchwords and to be printed on wove paper.
