[4], 92 pp.Rare "fourth" [recté fifth] (second American) edition of a guide to the sacrament of communion, written by the English minister of the Presbyterian church, Jabez Earle (1673/74 or 1676-1768). Following the author's two-page note to the reader, the main text occupies six chapters presenting the entire process surrounding communion: matters one needs to consider, actions one needs to take and words to be spoken, all when deciding one has a duty to take communion, resolving to actually do so, being admitted, preparing for communion, taking communion and reflecting on the communion afterward. An appendix following the main text (pp. 84-92) contains hymns, added for the first time in the present edition. The ESTC records four different issues of the present 1725 edition, each with a different Boston publisher and one also naming the printer Thomas Fleet. The ETSC records only 4 copies of the present issue and only 2, 1, 3 and 5 copies of the four known earlier editions. The boards, made from… Read More

[1] leaf (plus a duplicate) plus 15 original manuscript leaves mounted in white passe-partouts.Copy number 33 (from a limited edition of 40) of Ege’s famous portfolio containing a collection of 15 leaves from oriental manuscripts, written between the 12th and 18th centuries. The press run had to be limited because some of the manuscripts probably had no more than about 40 leaves.Otto Frederick Ege (1888-1951) was the dean of the Cleveland Institute of Art, a lecturer on the history and the art of the book at Western (later Case Western) Reserve University in Cleveland and a famous (or infamous) biblioclast. He was one of the key figures in creating a market for medieval manuscript leaves in America during the 20th century. Between 1917 and his death in 1951, Ege acquired, broke up and subsequently dispersed hundreds of medieval and other interesting manuscripts and early printed books, wanting to give as many private collectors and public institutions as possible the opportunity to own these… Read More

[1], "73" [= 64] engraved ll.A series of charming views of Vienna and its environs in the middle of Beethoven's thirty-five years there, around the time Wagner was born there, and about eight years after it became the capital of the new Austrian Empire, including views of Baden, Klosterneuburg, Bratislava and other neighbouring sites, all attractively and artistically coloured by a contemporary hand. It shows palaces, castles and ruins, churches, chapels and the Vienna cathedral, gardens and pavilions, city streets and squares, the spa at Baden, Christoph de Bach's Circus Gymnasticus, the lavish Apollo Saal, views along the Danube and more. The famous streets, squares, buildings and interiors appear bustling with fashionable ladies and gentlemen, pedestrians and horse-drawn carriages, and the river full of boats. Four views are signed by the artist, Josef Eisner (1788-1861), and about a third by the engraver, mostly Johann Jaresch (but two by Johann Boehm (ca. 1770-post 1821), probably as engraver).… Read More

[12], 172, “282” [= 284] pp.Third edition, expanded and edited by Jacobus Golius, of Erpenius's classic Arabic grammar. The present edition is augmented with an Arabic chrestomathy that Fabricius had published in 1638. Erpenius (1584-1624) revolutionized Arabic scholarship in Europe and made the Netherlands the most important European centre of Arabic studies before he died of the plague in 1624. His grammar remained the standard work in the field for two centuries. With the owner's inscription on a free endleaf, and a meticulously lettered note on p. 42 of the Lockman fabels. Some small defects, but otherwise in very good condition, with only a small marginal tear repaired and an occasional minor and mostly marginal spot or stain. Description:
[6], 374, [174] pp.Fifth, enlarged edition of the groundbreaking introduction to the Arabic language by Thomas Erpenius (1584-1624), the first professor of Arabic at Leiden University. He printed and published the first edition himself in 1620, one of the earliest major works using the Arabic types cut for his new oriental printing office by Arent Corsz. Hoogenacker in 1615. The Elzevirs acquired Erpenius’s materials and many of his workmen after his premature death from the plague and printed and published the second edition in 1628. Vitray’s third edition (Paris, 1638) is based on the second. These were all in 8vo format with about 250 pages. Albert Schultens (1686-1750), appointed professor of oriental languages at Leiden in 1732, prepared a greatly enlarged 4th edition in 1733, now in 4to format and more than three times as long. The additions included his own Clavis dialectorum, discussing the relations between Hebrew and Arabic words, and the Nawabig ’ul-kalim, a collection of proverbs… Read More
