Following the author's two-page note to the reader, the main text occupies six chapters presenting the entire process surrounding communion: matters one needs to consider, actions one needs to take and words to be spoken, all when deciding one has a duty to take communion, resolving to actually do so, being admitted, preparing for communion, taking communion and reflecting on the communion afterward. An appendix following the main text (pp. 84-92) contains hymns, added for the first time in the present edition. It was first published in Dutch as Batavia, de hoofdstad van Neêrlands O. Indien in 1782. The book not only provides a wealth of information on the Dutch colonial capital Batavia, but also describes Java’s natural history, geography, climate and tropical diseases (including beriberi) and the trade carried on by the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in the East Indies. The information is presented in an encyclopaedic manner, elaborating on each subject in a well-ordered way. The plates in the present German edition based on those in the first Dutch edition. Lewis (1708-1781) was a British chemist and physician who first published his Dispensary in London in 1753. In all later editions, including the revisions his plan and arrangement has been adopted. The editor of the revised edition, Andrew Duncan (1744-1828), dedicated his revision, based on the Phamacopoea Londinensis of 1788 and other Pharmacopoea’s, to Sir George Baker, president of the Royal College of Physicians. The dedication in our edition is dated Edinburgh, 1 November 1788, for the second edition of the revision (Edinburgh, Charles Elliot, 1789). The first edition had been published in 1786. Beginning with our 3rd edition of 1791 the Dispensatory was printed for William Creech, as are the 4th edition of 1794, the 5th of 1797 and the 6th of 1801.In good condition.l Wellcome III, p. 511.

Trying to reconstruct the calendar and chronology in use before the introduction of the Islamic Hijri calendar, Effendi studies the dates given for Muhammad's birth, the death of Muhammad's son Ibrahim, and the Hijra.In very good condition, untrimmed with most of the bolts unopened.l Cook, Islamic scholarly tradition, p. 45.

Elandt began work on the project ca. 1696 and engraved the plates after paintings by Jan van Orley (1665-1735), a well-known Brussels painter who specialized in religious scenes and altar pieces. The 12 beautiful etchings illustrate highlights from the life of Jesus. The binding is somewhat rubbed and the head of the spine slightly damaged. [6], III, [1], 416 pp.Cornelis van Eldik (1791-1857) was a Dutch medical doctor and in obstetrics. He was a teacher of medicine, a member of several medical committees in his hometown of Nijmegen. Together with his friend doctor A. Moll he edited a very successful medical journal: Practisch Tijdschrift voor de Geneeskunde in al haren omvang. Van Eldik wrote several works, mostly on obstetrics, but also on general medicine like the present work.Some damage to the head and foot of the spine, hinges somewhat weakened, covers slightly rubbed, corners show some signs of wear, small ink stain on the fore-edge. Visible watermarks in the first and last flyleaves, very slight foxing throughout. Overall in good condition.l BMN p. 378; cf. NNBW, p. 347.

In 34 chapters it relates the sea-battles of the Greek, the Phoenician and Egyptian trade routes, the sea-merchants from Venice, Genoa and Pisa, the explorers from Spain and Portugal, the Dutch and English East and West India Company, etc. Browned with some occasional minor foxing. Spine slightly discoloured. Overall in very good condition.

The present edition is augmented with an Arabic chrestomathy that Fabricius had published in 1638. Erpenius (1584-1624) revolutionized Arabic scholarship in Europe and made the Netherlands the most important European centre of Arabic studies before he died of the plague in 1624. His grammar remained the standard work in the field for two centuries. With the owner's inscription on a free endleaf, and a meticulously lettered note on p. 42 of the Lockman fabels. Some small defects, but otherwise in very good condition, with only a small marginal tear repaired and an occasional minor and mostly marginal spot or stain. Binding with a restoration at the head and foot of the spine but otherwise good, with slight wear at the hinges and extremities. Erpenius, one of the most distinguished orientalists of his day, published his famous Grammatica Arabica in 1613, followed in 1620 by the Rudimenta linguae Arabicae, a slightly abridged version of the Grammatica. It is dedicated to the Maronites Johannes Hesronita and Gabriel Sionita, the latter of whom would later edit the 1638-edition of the Rudimenta. It includes the Arabic text with Latin transcriptions of chapter 64 of the Quran.Annotation on title-page: "Collegii Remensis / Societatis Jesu / Catalogo Inscriptur". [6], 374, [174] pp.Fifth, enlarged edition of the groundbreaking introduction to the Arabic language by Thomas Erpenius (1584-1624), the first professor of Arabic at Leiden University. He printed and published the first edition himself in 1620, one of the earliest major works using the Arabic types cut for his new oriental printing office by Arent Corsz. Hoogenacker in 1615. The Elzevirs acquired Erpenius’s materials and many of his workmen after his premature death from the plague and printed and published the second edition in 1628. Vitray’s third edition (Paris, 1638) is based on the second. These were all in 8vo format with about 250 pages. Albert Schultens (1686-1750), appointed professor of oriental languages at Leiden in 1732, prepared a greatly enlarged 4th edition in 1733, now in 4to format and more than three times as long. According to some, his death was caused by a chemical experiment. His collected works were published before several times, but these received a lot of negative criticism. His son, Ernst Michael Ettmüller, took it upon himself to edit them for the present edition. It includes works on medicine, chemistry, pharmacy, surgery, etc.Ettmüller appears to be often neglected today, but was a much respected author until the 18th century. The second work adds medications for the illnesses diagnosed. Both were written by the Amsterdam physician Antonius Eygel (1621-1674), who took his doctor’s degree in 1644 in Harderwijk. A second edition of the first work appeared in 1677. Eygel opposes in the third part of the first book the works of Petrus Forestus (De incerto, fallacy, urinarum iudicio (1589)) and Guilielmus Statenus.Owner’s inscription of Petrus Didericus van Heimerberg, physician and burgomaster of Kampen, dated 20 August 1776 on the first endleaf, Jewish bookplate in roundel on the front paste-down.
