This book looks BRAND NEW AND BRIGHT although perhaps because it is thick with 525 pages the front board to fep join is roughened for part of its length so that we see the webbing-but that does not weaken the binding. Even though it is a 1927 first edition, it has a dust jacket that has just a nick at top and is a remarkable survivor. Tissue-proteced frontis in fine condition The book has no writing, no bumps. A few illustrations, all like new. Some toning. By far the best condition avalaiabale on the net today. Naibu Kanda lived 1857-1923. The coming of Perry's "black ships' was a turning point for the Japanese and in particular for the author second Baron Kanda. Scholar, statesman, member House of Peers, founder of Tokyo University of Commerce. 516 pages plus prelims. Some slight evidence of toning of pages but book is unmarked. This is the hard-bound copy with dust jacket AND signed by author. "Rob England." The pages are toned but otherwise unmarked and the dust jacket is like new in a protective Brodart. In all respects except one, the DJ is NEW. The exception s that at back is a V tear half an inch long quarter inch wide tapering to zero. The figure of 20 million considers only veterans in the USA and Canada and includes survivors from WWI. The study presents an account of the systems set up by Canada and the U,S, to assist veterans and the costs incured. It includes the Canadian Plan, the G.I. A SHORT MEMOIR of an Antique Medal Lately found Friars' Walk Near the City of Cork .
An odd book publshed way back in 1819 by Longman's. Longman's is a highly reputable publisher established in 1724. This book is found in a few national and major libraries and just occasionally offered for sale/. It has only 57 pages on quality rag peper, now wood pulp. The author writes that the medal was found in a potato parch and "bought from a poor illiterate man". The Reverend Hincks of Trinity College Dublin wrote (December 1818) that it was identical to one in the possession of Hottinger (Heirich Hottinbger the medallist?) in October 1818. It was of brass and somewhat similar to a medal described in Rowland's Mona Antiqua Restauratata. A fascinating discovery
