Cambridge at the University Press, 1909. Hard Cover. Very Good binding. Large 8vo.; in the publisher's green buckram binding with spine lettered in gilt and beveled edges; xxix, [1]. 263 pages including the Index; top edge gilt with other edges rough-cut; there is a small and neatly penned name on the front endpaper; with photogravure portrait frontispiece, protected with a tissue guard and a facsimile; the spine is just a bit darkened and there is a very faint musty odor.~~Two essays written in 1842 and 1844, in which Darwin's theory of natural selection is first considered; the 1842 essay was published earlier that year, but this is the first appearance in print of the 1844 essay, and thus the first appearance of the two essays together. London: Printed for J. Harding by R. and A. Taylor, 1818. Half Leather. Very Good binding. Two volumes bound together. The first volume being the bibliographical and textual history and criticism by the editor, Joseph Haslewood. Second volume is the "fac-simile edition of the first impression of the Itinerary" (p. 142), published concurrently. The most famous of Brathwaite's works (his family name changed spellings like the weather), Barnabee's Journal was published under the pseudonym Corymbaeus, and it wasn't until this edition that the authorship was ascertained. "A sprightly record of English travel, in Latin and English doggerel verse... Southey pronounced the original the best piece of rhymed Latin in modern literature." (DNB II, 1142). The Seventh Edition of the Itinerarium, the first Haslewood edition, bound together with the publisher's facsimile of the First Issue; collation and pagination reset. Lvtetiae [Paris]: Apud Mamertum Patissonium, in officina Rob. Stephani, 1577. Full Leather. Very Good binding. A First Edition copy of Joseph Scaliger's controversial nova edition of Catullus, Tibullus, and Propertius. According to Jacob Bernays "this was Scaliger's most methodical edition, the one which marked his complete triumph over the vanity and incompetence of Italian correctors... Timpanaro has argued that this edition of Catullus is the most remarkable anticipation of Lachmann's method before the eighteenth century." One volume, printed in two parts, with separate title page, pagination, and register; woodcut engraved vignettes on the title pages. [16], 274, [2], 252, [16] pp. Final leaf blank; E7 and S2 also blanks, all present. Spot of staining affecting the fore edge of about the last thirty pages.
