The copy appears to be the second catalogue of books for sale offered by this Milanese bookseller, Branca e Dupuy.  A copy listed in NUC of a 1833 edition is located at Columbia and the Newberry Library. The first 154 pages of this catalogue is a manual for booksellers and contains a series of essays on the origins of printing, the first presses in Italy, the art of printing in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries.  Equally as important are Branca's essays on bibliography, a bookselling and publishing. Nicely illustrated manual which begins with a discussion of the difficulties of cultivating cranberries, the failure of many farmers to produce successful crops, and tip on how to build a successful business of cranberry growing.

Edinburgi: Excudebant Jacobus Pillans & Fillii, 1804.  12mo.  175 x 100 mm., [7 x 4 inches].  186 pp.  Bound in 19th century ¾  black morocco, leather spine and corners, marbled paper boards; joint cracked but expertly repaired with tissue; text block brown with age but in good condition. A few pencil marks appear in the margins.  Nineteenth- century ownership stamp of George R. Brush, M.D./US Navy of Sayville, N. Y. on title-page.  With faults a good, sound copy. This catalogue of approximately 2,500 titles, is organized alphabetically and is exclusively devoted to medicine and the related sciences. The collection is strong in 16th and 17th century titles and as one might expect a very good collection of 18th century books, especially titles printed at the end of the century.  There are also a good number of dissertations and pamphlets included, which add to the comprehensive nature of this catalogue's holdings. First manual on the art of dyeing printed in America. Ellis's work is a treasure house of information on the methods and materials required to produce colored dyes for use in the production of textiles. It is important as a document of American enterprise during the last years of 18th century and includes not only home grown recipes but also important information on British and French methods for producing color. It was printed in Western Massachusettes, center of both the woolen trand and textile manufacturing in the United States. Philadelphia and Boston: Carey & Hart and Hill & Broadhead, 1847.  4to.  275 x 225 mm., [10 ¾ x 9 inches].  99 pp.  Illustrated with an engraved mezzotint title-page and 9 mezzotint engravings by John Sartain.  Brown publisher's cloth, gilt title and decoration on the upper board and in blind on the lower board.  Binding cloth uniformly faded, head and tail of spine and corners a bit chipped and frayed. Preliminary leaves foxed, text block foxed mostly at margins and on tissue guards.  Mezzotints generally clean. First edition of Emerson's poem, "The World Soul," which appeared a few months before it was printed in his 1847 edition of Poems. This issued of Diadem also includes a number of stories from European authors including Julius, or the Two Prisoners, translated from the French by R. Toepffer, and Poor Margaret  translated from the German by Joana Schopenhauer.
