First Edition, First Printing. Personal account of the 'Putumayo Affair' and international scandal. Personal account by Hardenburg who, on his way from Panama to visit the Amazon, stumbled upon the atrocities being committed under the auspices of Julio Arana, a local rubber baron living in Iguitos, Peru. This occurred in the early 1900s when rubber was in demand world-wide and fortunes were made but labor was exploited. Hardenburg saw first-hand the maltreatment of the Huitoto Indians who were forced to tap rubber trees. After years of rejection, the British press finally published his story and the entire 'Putumayo Affair' became an international scandal. Ellet compiled her history of 'The Women of the Revolution,' she could not have foreseen the deep interest in Colonial and Revolutionary history, that was destined to mark the last decade of the Nineteenth Century, nor could she have realized that the various patriotic societies that were to be organized among women, would lead to as great an interest in the lives of the mothers as in those of the fathers of the Republic. Yet the writer of these sketches of noted women has…

Description:
First Edition thus (1913). Quite rare. Printed by order of the trustees of the British Museum, and sold at the museum. Includes photos and commentary on the Rosetta Stone. Better than good in original paper cover, a bit damp stained on edges, but not affecting the content, which is in very good condition, with clean text and unmarred. Cover with creases and closed tears along edges. The Rosetta Stone is a stele inscribed with three versions of a decree issued in Memphis, Egypt in 196 BC during the Ptolemaic dynasty on behalf of King Ptolemy V Epiphanes. The top and middle texts are in Ancient Egyptian using hieroglyphic and Demotic scripts respectively, while the bottom is in Ancient Greek. There are only minor differences between the three versions, which made the Rosetta Stone key to deciphering the Egyptian scripts. Folio. Overall, a very nice copy of this famous academic work.
