Description:
1833. Mezzotint. 570mm by 445mm (frame). Field Marshal Henry Hardinge, 1st Viscount Hardinge, GCB, PC was a British Army officer and politician. After serving in the Peninsula War and the Waterloo Campaign he became Secretary at War in Wellington's ministry. After a tour as Chief Secretary for Ireland in 1830 he became Secretary at War again in Sir Robert Peel's cabinet. He went on to be Governor-general of India at the time of the First Anglo-Sikh War and then Commander-in-Chief of the Forces during the Crimean War. Framed in an antique black and gilt frame with old glass. Remounted at a later stage. Some overall toning, one faint mark in background.

He was a surgeon at Middlesex Hospital, London, and devoted himself especially to pelvic operations upon women. In 1886 he became assistant surgeon to the hospital for women. At the Royal College of Surgeons he won the Jacksonian prize in 1892 with his essay on diseases of the ovaries and the uterine appendages, their pathology, diagnosis and treatment. 1740. Copper-line engraving. 100mm by 95mm (platemark). Cowper, Lord Chancellor'. William Cowper, 1st Earl Cowper PC KC FRS (1665-1723) was an English politician who became the first Lord Chancellor of Great Britain. Ravenet studied engraving and etching in Paris, under Jacques Philippe Le Bas. In 1743, he moved to London to assist William Hogarth in the engraving of his Marriage a la Mode paintings. Ravenet remained in London for the rest of his life. The majority of his work was produced for large-scale publishers including Robert Sayer, John and Paul Knapton, and, especially, John Boydell. He also engraved the portraits of such eminent figures as George II, Alexander Pope and David Hume. Ravenet played a significant part in the London art institutions that were developing at the time. He sat on the committee of the Society of Artists in 1767 and in 1770, he joined the Royal Academy as one of only six associate engravers. One very small spot.
