Pencil ownership signature of Elizabeth F. Williamson. This scarce third edition contains a chapter titled "Demonology," (greatly expanded from the second edition) in which the author criticizes mesmerism, after the famous "Witchcraft" lawsuit brought against one of her former followers.

A group photo in the door of Edison's laboratory, (now the Edison Museum). Very good condition, matted and framed. Carlo Wedekind patented a gas turbine in 1908.

This Hawaiian edition adds an appendix containing a review of the work which was not included in the London edition of the same year. With engraved folding map, frontispiece portrait, and four engraved plates. Rubbing at the top and bottom of the spine, and with slight wear to the label affecting a few letters, corners bumped, small piece torn from the top of the title page, but an excellent copy, fresh, with light foxing and browning, quite scarce in original condition. With the ownership signature and bookplate of George H. Dole, brother of Hawaiian President Sanford Dole. Not in Hill; Forbes 600.

For whatever reason Forbes never located a copy of this edition although NUC lists several. See Forbes 993 for the American revised edition.

Three-quarter calf with marbled boards, black leather labels. A little light foxing to the plates, but a nice copy of this "most important book on the history and ethnology of the Society Islands, by one of the most perceptive missionary travelers in the Pacific", Hill 549; Forbes 718.

London: G. Robinson, 1782. First edition. Two volumes. 8vo Contemporary speckled calf, red and green lettering pieces, joints a bit worn but holding. Volume one with a folding map of the voyage and eight engraved plates, volume two with 13 engraved plates after the author's drawings, including eight plates of Hawaii, two of Alaska, and three of the Northwest Coast. Ellis's account of Captain James Cook's third voyage preceded the official account. Scarce in original, unrestored condition. Ref. Beddie, 1599; Forbes 41; Lada-Mocarski 35. "William Ellis, a surgeon's mate and talented amateur artist, was first on the 'Discovery' and on February 16, 1779, was discharged to the 'Resolution'. His descriptions reflect his artist's eye and form an important supplement to the official account, which it preceded by two years." Forbes.
