Howes. 256pp. Frontis, 2 folding maps. Rust cloth, gilt. A very fine copy with pictorial dust jacket (jacket spine slightly faded). An account of a 19 year old traveling from Texas to California in the year 1849. Eccleston was a New Yorker who joined a California company (the Frémont Association) that decided to go to Galveston, Texas by sea and then take the southwestern trail to California. Despite his youth, Eccleston was a keen observer and a compulsive recorder leaving us with a vivid picture of life on the trail. His journal was of special value for the historian because it established a new date for the opening of the Tucson cutoff to wagon traffic. "As the editors point out, the party charted new ground by opening wagon travel over the Tucson Cutoff or Apache Pass Trail. From Tucson, Eccleston and… Read More

Description:
Boston: Christian Scientists' Publishing Co. First facsimile edition. A facsimile edition of the first sixteen issues of this landmark periodical, published and edited by the founder of the Christian Science movement. This facsimile printing was produced because of the demand for copies of the Journal. In the 1880's there were but a few hundred Christian Scientists. In the 1950's there were several hundred thousand, and the demand for copies increased proportionally. The original printing of the Journal is excessively rare. Mary Baker Glover Eddy (1821-1910) advocated Christian Science as a spiritual practical solution to health and moral issues. Her Journal was "An Independent Family Paper, to Promote Health and Morals." It included instructive articles and verified reports of Christian healing. Each issue also contained questions and answers about Christian Science, book reviews, interviews, poems, and a worldwide directory of Christian Science practitioners, teachers,… Read More

Description:
Boston: Printed and sold by D. Henchman, 1749 First edition of this prime Americana classic, Brainerd had remarkable success with numerous Indian tribes, and left us a diary account that is unequalled. Pp. [2], xii, [18, list of subscribers], 316, [2, ads]. Somewhat later half morocco and marbled boards. Contemporary owner's signature (John Fullerton) to top border of Preface. Upper outer hinges starting, text browned, spotted and stained, upper corner of title leaf repaired with some loss. A very good copy. This work presents a biography of the famed Indian missionary adapted from his own diary, by the renowned New England divine, Jonathan Edwards. Expelled from Yale for sympathizing with the Whitefield revival and for remarking that a college tutor had "no more grace than this chair," Brainerd was nevertheless successful as a missionary to various Indian tribes in the Massachusetts/New York border region and in New Jersey. He died at the age of twenty-nine in the home of Edwards, whose… Read More
