Description:
To the head of the Pennsylvania Museum and School of Industrial Art, Leslie William Miller (1848-1031), Eakins proposes an exhibit. "Thinking it might be of interest to young composers to see all the working drawings for a composite picture, I send you those of my my compositions now on exhibition at the Philadelphia Academy of the Fine Arts, a portrait of Mrs. Frishmuth ['Antiquated Music' Portrait of Sarah Sagehorn Frishmuth shown seated with her collection of musical instruments 1900], who gave the University of Pennsylvania (Archeological Dep't) its superb collection of musical instruments. The first sketch and general perspective are for convenience made one sixth the size of the picture that is they are to be viewed at one sixth from the eye of the finished picture. To save time in calculating proportions, I have as some cases used a table of logarithms...." He signs, "Thomas Eakins." The letter presents Eakins as both a portrait painter and an art educator. Description:
This is a beautiful photograph of Egk , taken at the piano. He is seated and facing the camera with serious expression. It was taken in his late years, as his hair is white. He is formally dressed in suit and tie. The beauty of the black and white picture lies in its aesthetic, as he is seated at a grand piano with light-filled windows at his back and his reflection is caught in the raised cover of the grand piano. He signs on the lower white margin in a large hand, "Werner Egk." A very artistic image. When radio broadcasting became available to the public, Egk immediately realized its importance as a mass media and developed operas and radio plays. At the beginning of the 1930s, Egk turned his interest towards ballet and opera. In 1935, he premiered his first opera "Die Zaubergeige "("The magic violin"). His opera "Peer Gynt" is based on Henrik Ibsen's play. Autograph

Description:
Ensor signed and dated in pencil, "James Ensor 1888" According to Albert Croquez catalog of Ensor engravings (1947) , the head in the lower left corner is that of Jean Jacques Rousseau's son. The image measures about 2 x 3 inches on a 4to sheet, 4to, From the collection of Augusta Bogaerts, life long friend of Ensor. The artist's name "Ensor'' is written in pencil along the verso imprint. Exceptional in association and fine condition. Augusta Bogaerts (1870-1951) and Ensor had a long perhaps ambiguous relationship. She was 18 when they met in 1888, 10 years younger than the 28 year old artist. In that most creative year, of his 1888, Ensor turned his attention to religious themes incorporating his fascination with macabre masks and skeletons. He produced his "Chimera" etching among many engravings and also started to work on his most important painting "The Entry of Christ into Brussels," completed in 1889, considered "scandalous" at the time. Much later in his life, Ensor portrayed Augusta Bogaerts… Read More

Description:
He writes to Leon Edel, Henry James biographer. "May I intrude upon your scholarship if it extends to Henry James senior. I want to use a quotation which F. O. Matthiessen gives partially on p. 13 of 'The James Family' and I have no idea where to find it. Matthiessen writes, 'probably James best-known remark is that "to a right-minded man" a crowded horse-car is "the nearest approach to heaven upon earth"...." Evans explains he seeks the exact quotation noting that, "F. O. M. does not give a hint of his source...knowing your erudition I do hope you may have in mind...do not take down any books yourself for my quest. I'll do that..." He signs in full, "Walker Evans." Evans found the actual quote and used it in his photographic portraits of New York City riders titled, "Many Are Called." The correct quote reads: "To a right-minded man, a crowded Cambridge horse car is the nearest approach to heaven upon earth." [Walker Evans, "A Penitent Spy," Rathbone, 2000]. Evans had left his post as editor of… Read More

Description:
Philip Evergood writes to Sidney Hill regarding, among other things, Sidney's catalogue of his Charles Dana Gibson show. Sidney Hill was co-owner. at the time, with his brother, Henry, of Berry-Hill Galleries in New York. Henry and Sidney moved from London to New York during World War II and established Berry-Hill Galleries. While they were scholars of and dealers in antiquities and gold boxes, they became known in America for dealing in American art. Berry-Hill had an exhibition from October 1 - November 15, 1965 of "Charles Dana Gibson, 1867-1944: Creator of the ‘Gibson Girl'," an exhibition of over 100 original Gibson black and white drawings from the artist's collection. Evergood says that he is a "great admirer of Gibson for in his smooth way he is a social satirist of great stature like George Grosz was in a savage way." Evergood says that he is not sure he will get to see the exhibition because of "my wife's broken arm" and "some of my own problems which include great pressures of work...."… Read More
