Description:
From inside dust jacket:
For many Americans the First World War is the forgotten war: a war that seems to have fallen into an historical void between the Civil War and World War II. This is surprising given its profound significance to the United States. More than four million Americans were mobilized in 1917-18, of whom more than 100,000 were killed--double the number who died in Vietnam. This was the first, bloody step on the road to globalism which would characterize our foreign policy for the rest of the twentieth century. Even American literature was transformed by the impact of the war on writers like Hemingway and Fitzgerald.
Internationally, more than any other event, the First World War made the twentieth century what it was: It topped the four great empires of the Old World and left a fifth--the British--mortgaged to the hilt. More than nine million men lost their lives, yet none of its stated objectives were met. Rather, it spawned seven decades of Communist rule in Russia, the rise of… Read More

Very Good condition. Silver cloth over boards with black text and image on front. Black text on spine. I would've rated this higher, but there is a bit of gray stread about 1 inch in from edge of front and close to spine. I'm not sure if it is "rubbing" or a misprint of the silver. Also, bottom back corner has a slight "bend", hardly noticeable. Text is clean and binding is tight.

From inside flap: "As black Arkansans emerged from chattel slavery in the aftermath of the Civil War and the Emancipation Proclamation, they were supported in their efforts to redefine their lives by the work of the Freedmen's Bureau, a federal agency monitoring the South to ensure that at least a modicum of freedom was granted to the new citizens. The story is told from the perspective of the blacks and whites who directly benefited from the Bureau, rather than from the perspective of the government bureaucrats, as found in reports from other states. From front Dust Jacket flap: "Traditionally recognized as a craft, quiltmaking is today being seen as a new and exciting art form. Whatever the intention of the quiltmaker, the creation of a quilt provides an opportunity to design with color and fabric. While many quilts are still made purely as bed coverings, quilted works may also be made into clothing, or artworks for the wall." "Piece by Piece is a beautiful and practical introduction to this fascinating art. From the elements of design and color which combine to create different effects with fabric, to basic instructions about how to construct a quilt, the book shows quiltmakers how to experiment with a variety of techniques in order to develop and create their own quilts."Techniques include: piecing, applique, fabric manipulation - plus: drafting, assembling, quilting and finishing. Description:
From "What is a Ghost Town?":
"One of several dictionary definitions of "ghost" is "a shadowy semblance of its former self." We have elected to prefer this somewhat ambiguous phrase, because it accurately describes many towns on the borderline of being dead or alive. Most of the towns described and pictured in this book are "dead" ghosts, but some still have life, though nothing to compare with the lusty vigor thye enjoyed in their heyday."
The book covers Alaska, the Yukon, British Columbia, Arizona, California, Colorado, Utah, Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Oregon, and Washington. Lots of black and white photographs.
Book - Good+ condition. Brown paper over boards with gold gilt text on spine. Very little edge/corner wear, but there are a few light stains/spots. There is also a slight twist that I expect will be resolved with proper shelving. Text is clean and binding is good. This is a thick and super heavy book. Description:
From the Preface: "[Missouri] has sent to Congress statesmen of national renown. She has produced artists and authors of worth. More than any other state did she send forth her hardy men to explore and settle the West. She gave to the nation journalists of ability and courage. She has borne reformers and scientists, whose work will live. Her soldiers have cast glory on their patriotic people." This book, devoted to these men and women, has been published for use in the public schools.Poor condition. Grayish green cloth covers with dark green text and graphic. Cover shows spine edge and corner wear, plus there may have been something pasted to the front cover as there are swirls of glue? remaining. This appears to be ex-library as there is a pocket remnant on the inside front cover. There is also Racheport High School writing in pencil. The front end paper has a partial tear, but the cover is still attached. The pages have light tanning, but are free of marks. The binding appears to be mostly good.… Read More
