Description:
20-32 pages with tables and bibliography. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 8 1/4") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Southwestern Journal of Anthropology Volume 24, Number 1 complete issue. First edition. While conducting archaeological excavations in Alaska from 1926 to 1938, Ales Hrdlicka noted that an unusually large number or the recovered skulls showed a premortem loss of anterior teeth. He attributed the condition to "ritual ablation" and saw its presence in Asiatic as well as American material as an important cultural line between the aboriginal populations of the two continents. His conclusions, along with extensive tables of observations made on more than 8000 skulls, were presented in the article "Ritual Ablation of Front Teeth in Siberia and America," published in 1940. This report has been cited and referred to without citation, but it has not been subjected to formal review. While preparing a paper for the 32 Annual Meeting of the American Association of Physical Anthropologist, and… Read More

Description:
473-499 pages with cited references. Quatro (11" x 8 1/2") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Current Anthropology Volume 40 Number 4 complete issue. First edition. Ironically, as many Western scholars have turned to constructivist theories to explain new ethnic movements and forms of identity politics, the subjects of their studies have begun to embrace a form of essentialism to justify their political legitimacy. This article presents a critical rethinking of constructivist and essentialist approaches to identity formation and maintenance. Drawing upon Maya ethnotheoretical models of identity, I introduce the analytic concept of cultural logic—generative principles realized through cognitive schemas that promote intersubjective continuity and are conditioned by the unique contingencies of life histories and structural positions in political‐economic systems. I show how the concept of metaphysical balance in Maya cosmology illuminates the working of a uniquely Maya cultural logic, and I… Read More

Description:
1503-1537 pages. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/2") loose pages. American Historical Review, Volume 74, number 5. First edition. The Cortes of León from year 1188 was a parliamentary body in the medieval Kingdom of León. According to UNESCO it is the first documented written example of modern parliamentarism in the history of Europe. After coming to power, King Alfonso IX, faced an attack by his two neighbours, Castile and Portugal, decided to summon the Curia regis. This was a mediæval organisation composed of aristocrats and bishops, but because of the seriousness of the situation and the need to maximise political support, Alfonso IX took the decision to also call the representatives of the urban middle class from the most important cities of the kingdom to the assembly. However, all these meetings were exceptional and did not lead to a regular attendance of town representatives in the Curiae. León's Cortes dealt with matters like the right to private property, the inviolability of domicile, the… Read More

Description:
74 pages with diagrams and portrait of T R Dawson. Octavo (8" x 5 3/4") issued in wrappers. In German and English. (Lusis: 2538) First edition. In this work, the authors have pursued two aims: they wished to keep alive the memory of the great "Fairy King", Thomas Rayner Dawson and at the same time to provide a challenging introduction to "Chess Unlimited"> To this end they have opened with a chapter which is dedicated to Dawson, the man and the promblemist, have added to this a general consideration of the elements of fairy chess, and then in a series of further chapters, have dealt with the most important kinds of fairy chess, not however exclusively with those types which Dawson himself invented, but also other fields in which we owe to him unforgettable compositions. all the selected examples are Dawson's own. His well-known writings, his big collection of problems and his own records, Now housed by C E Kemp, constitute an inexhaustible source of material. Condition:A better than very good copy.

ShareA disgraced director wants a comeback, but a rival wants him dead. Carson Drury's first movie was a smash hit that raised his reputation from that of boy genius to greatest director of all time. His second film, The Imperial Albertsons, was even more ambitious, but aggressive editing from the suits at RKO Pictures ruined the movie, and Drury's career with it. A detective working for the ultraexclusive Hollywood Security Agency, Elliott spends his days and nights helping the stars keep their private lives private. 300 pages. Octavo (8 3/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's quarter yellow cloth with silver lettering to spine over yellow boards in original pictorial jacket. First edition.
In such previous titles as The Lost Keats, Faherty gave heart and soul to academic, potentially dry topics. In this series debut, he starts with a jazzier premise but is markedly less successful at making it vital. Former actor Scott Elliott now provides hired security in post-WWII Tinseltown as a major studio gears up to shoot the sequel to a blockbuster movie that strongly resembles a real film starring Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart. The screenwriter is boozy and jaded; the producer is driven and brilliant. A secret communication suggests a Communist past for the writer, and, as the House Un-American Activities Committee focuses its spotlight, Elliott is called upon to investigate. The writer dies; authorship of the valuable screenplay is quickly questioned; and hidden pasts of all key players soon matter. Elliott… Read More

xii+227 pages with frontispiece map, plates, tables, appendices, bibliography and index. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6") bound in original publisher's brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial wrappers. From the library of Professor Donald Worcester. First edition. The Rural People of Colombia are being swept into the whirl of social revolution that promises to be the distinguishing feature of our century. Four hundred years of toil might have been expected to numb the peasants' sensitivity to progress -- to have turned them into apparently resigned, docile individuals. But the fact that they have been both exploited and neglected is slowly dawning on them. Donald E. Worcester (1915-2003) was an American historian who specialized in Southwestern United States and Latin American history. He was president of the Western History Association from 1974-1975. Worcester graduated from Bard College in 1939. He received an M.A. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1941. He then served… Read More

[69]-77 pages with 2 tables and 4 plates. Royal octavo (9 3/4" x 6 1/2") bound in original wrappers. Papers of the Peabody Museum of American Archaeology and Ethnology, Volume III, number 3. First edition.
A great deal has been written concerning the abnormities of the hands and feet, and numerous cases of polydactylism, syndactylism, and macrodactylism have been recorded; but, very few cases of hypophalangia or hyperphalangia have ever been noted. The following case of hypophalangia, or diminution in the number of phalanges, came under the author's notice a few years earlier. After careful examination the anomaly was found to be interesting not only as a case of anatomical variation, but also as a study in heredity. All the digits of all the extremities of thirty-seven persons were affected and the anomaly is inherited in conformity with Mendel's law of five generations. Measurements, tracings, photographs, radiographs, plaster casts and complete genealogical tables were made.

403 pages including bibliography and index. Octavo (9" x 6 1/4") bound in original paper with white lettering to cover and spine. Originally published in English in 2006.
For 15 years, Marcia Farr studied ranchers -- a transnational community of families who were filed simultaneously in the city of Chicago and their hometown in Michoacán, Mexico. In this ethno-linguistic representation, Marcia Farr examines three outstanding representative styles of speech that characterizes ranchers: openness (speech sincere, frank and direct), respect (speech and respectful deference); and relaxation (humorous artistic language that allows verbal criticism of the social order maintained through respect). The author studies the construction of local identity in everyday conversations within a community and provides the reader with an extensive analysis of language and identity among transnational Mexicans.
Besides raising awareness of the history of ranchers in Mexico for the first time in the English version for an… Read More
