In near fine condition, signed to upper cover by Zaidi and inscribed "To Prof. Robinson with compliments 16.7.64". From the collection of Kenneth Robinson (1914-2005), a distinguished civil servant who became an expert on colonial government and administration. He was closely involved in international aspects of postwar planning, including former colonies, in south-West Africa (now Namibia), and became the Commonwealth Office expert on French West Africa. He became assistant secretary in the CO in 1946 (and head of the West African department), but resigned in 1948 to become reader in Commonwealth government at Oxford and subsequently director and professor of commonwealth affairs at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies in London. [19]79' but we can find no record of the book or its author; no imprint is given. Stiff card wrappers, upper cover with woodcut, twelve full page woodcut images with a few words of engraved text that begins: 'Peter Brueghel, the Artist Saw it from both sides:' followed by a series based on the deadly sins and non-cardinal virtues. Later he moved to Taggs Yard in Barnes, south west London, where he built and ran his own school, welcoming pupils and making friends such as Ginger Rogers from across the world at a time when studio pottery was enjoying newfound popularity. The book is Very Good in the black publisher's cloth binding lettered in yellow, boards a little scuffed and spine lightly creased, outer leaves and edges foxed, top corner torn from the front free end paper, no adverts to the rear of the book; with the original mauve pictorial dustjacket which depicts two silhouetted eights in action on the front panel of the jacket. The jacket is good, faded, torn across the front panel which has a small damp stain, chipped to corners and the foot of the spine. Steve Fairbairn is credited with revolutionising rowing technique in the Britain in the early twentieth century through his pioneering work at Jesus College Cambridge and his subsequent publications. Contains 12 10x14cm photographic reproductions of engravings and other photographs dating from c1750- 1910, one per page tipped in to card within an attractive bespoke binding of red leather with gilt dentelles, all edges gilt. Very good condition, edges rubbed, the leather is protected by a home made felt cover embroidered with the crest and motto of the family. The engravings are well annotated, the photographs, which include a daughter in ballet costume, are unnamed. Attractive bookplate of Stan Robinson to front pastedown. A most interesting collection. Oxford: The University Press, 1842. Lancastrian Parr-Hesketh-Fleetwood-Childers family Book of Common Prayer. Bound in pretty black morocco gilt, all edges gilt. Filled with family ephemera including a printed biography of Sir Peter Hesketh Fleetwood on the front pastedown, the bookplate of 'Parr Aughton in Ormskirk' opposite with a gift inscription: 'Louise Debonaire Knowlys. The gift of her Godmother Maria Charlotte Childers 1845.' The following blanks have a Parr family and additional Hesketh genealogies. Printed prayers and other inserts with two swatches of childrens' hair from the 1860s have been tipped in before the service for the Burial of the Dead, both daughters of Geoffrey and Annie Nightingale. Manuscript genealogies continue across the final blank leaves. The book was acquired from the collection of the Hesketh-Fleetwood family at Meols Hall in Southport on the Lancashire coast. Paris: De L'imprimerie De P Didot L'Aine, 1799. Very Good. pp226 Edition stereotype, dated "An VII" (1799) according to the French Republican calendar, volume I only. In a French Didot binding of red leather with gilt spine lettering, all edges gilt, aqua coloured watered silk end papers, engraved frontispiece, many engraved plates. The soft red leather binding is rubbed to the covers and edges and especially to the spine which is chipped at the ends but the binding is tight. Internally near fine, crisp and clean apart from some stains to the first few pages. This book belonged to the family of Richard Cromwell Warner who has inscribed the first blank with the story of how as a child his grandfather, Richard Warner, had thrown volume II out of the porthole of a ship on the way to the West Indies in order to avoid any further study of French! A beautifully produced little volume. Very Good 1799
