In half vellum over 17th- or 18th-century woodblock printed paste paper, titled in manuscript on spine. Lower board ruptured near corner, subsequently rebuilt. Some leaves toned brown. Early ownership inscriptions and later bibliographical notes on front free endpaper and on rear pastedown. Inscribed by Fiala to George B. Stuart (dated 1912). Original snapshot of author as an older man laid in. Original sale brochure of the Fiala sporting goods company included. Bound in recent green cloth with paper labels on spine. Renewed headbands and endleaves. Top edge gilt. The polar explorer's family owned a gun shop and sporting goods store in New York. This copy of Fiala's account of the Ziegler Polar Expedition (1903-05), inscribed and complete with map, comes with a bonus of the 48-page catalogue issued by the store in 1928, listing rifles and firearms, knives, compasses, lamps, binoculars, and all manner of specialized clothing for hunting.

Florence: Niccolò Conti, 1819. Good. 16 cm; 2 volumes. 279; 318 pages. Engraved title page in volume one, with portrait of Filicaia. Original publisher's wraps, printed with ads, curled at corners and perishing from spine. Unopened, untrimmed. Early ownership inscription on front blank of volume 1 and on title page of volume 2. Sewing weak but holding. As baroque tendencies waned in the second half of the 17th century, a rational and classicist trend grew. Filicaia was one of the most influential voices in this trend. One of the first members of the Arcadian Academy, he was a favorite of Queen Christina of Sweden. This collection was first published in 1707, the year of FIlicaia's death.

ca. 1880. Acceptable. Albumen-silver print on paper. 255 x 197 mm. Signed and titled in plate. Paper creased in five places. Depicts the serapeum of Saqqara surmounted by a man holding a camel by its bridle, with several figures standing in the shadow of the entrance way.

According to the Henry Ford Archive: McGuffey Readers had a deep and lasting influence on Henry Ford. They were among the earliest objects reflecting the American experience that Henry Ford collected, beginning in the 1910s. Ford bought every copy that he could find—amassing, by the 1930s, a collection of 468 copies of 145 different editions. A strong believer in McGuffey’s educational principles, Ford perpetuated these beliefs by founding the Edison Institute Schools. He even had the readers reprinted so that the children in the schools could use them.

Anthology of revolutionary poetry published to feed the fever of of the growing independence movement in Italy. The drive to overthrow the Austrian and French control of Italy broke into violence in several Italian cities in 1830 and 1831. Bologna, together with a few surrounding cities, actually declared independence, and existed as a self-governing entity (The United Provinces) for several months before being overcome by a fresh assault of the Austrian military. Bologna, 1699.. Good. 20 lines of text on 1 leaf watermarked laid paper (267 x 190 mm), addressed to an agent in the sale of two pictures. Slight tears where the paper has disintegrated under ink strokes result in negligible loss. Marcantonio Franceschini (1648-1729) is considered the quintessential representative of Bolognese classicism of the late 17th century. Schooled in a baroque tradition arching back to the Caracci, the artist gracefully anticipated elements of the subsequent neoclassical style. Among his most important projects was the decoration of a suite of rooms in the Liechtenstein Garden Palace at Rossau-Vienna, commissioned by Johann Adam Andreas, Prince of Liechtenstein (1656-1712). The letter offered here is an elegant register of market pressures and personal anxieties involved in Franceschini's commercial negotiations.
