The scientist Fabio Colonna (1567-1650) recognized that the study of leaves by themselves was not sufficient to discern or to classify them properly, especially with regard to those that could be used medicinally. An epileptic, he was drawn to the study of botany as means of finding herbs and concoctions from plants that could be used to ameliorate the symptoms and effects of epilepsy.

Frances Eliza Hodgson Burnett (18491924) published this, her first children's book, as a serial in the St. Nicholas Magazine between November 1885 and October 1886, and as a book by Scribner's in New York in 1886; it has probably never been out of print since then. It was, of course, successful almost beyond belief and had the effect, unfortunate or otherwise, of parents' dressing their male sons in velvet costumes. Gainsborough's 1770…

Francesco Petrarca (1304 1374) is often called the "Father of Humanism," but readers are more likely to remember that he gave up his vocation as a priest when he was attracted by the sight "Laura" in 1327 in the church of Sainte-Claire d'Avignon. He composed some 366 poems, Il Canzoniere, thirty of which are here translated into English, along with three odes. In Petrarch's Canzoniere 164: An Anthology of…

Romæ, Impensis Fausti Amidei Bibliopolæ in via Cursus. Ex Typgraphia Bernabò, & Lazzarini, 1742. FIRST EDITION. Large 4to, xi [xii blank], 58, 8 full-page engraved plates of musical instruments, 5 engraved vignettes, contemporary vellum, with the armorial book plate of E. de Blavette on the front paste-down end-paper; fore-margins of first few leaves slightly frayed, slight wear to binding, but generally a very good copy. Francesco Bianchini [1662-1729] was librarian to Cardinal Ottoboni, later Pope Alexander VIII, in Rome. He seems to have been a much respected antiquary who enjoyed considerable Papal patronage. Bianchini's name is often spelled Blanchini, but it seems to be one and the same person. Graesse in his 'Supplement' of 1869 lists the work under Bianchini gives these as alternative spellings for the same person. [With thanks to John Wilbraham for this information.] This seems to be a work that Bianchini compiled as librarian, and it was not published…

London: Printed for W. Innys and J. Richardson..., 1756. 8vo, 197 x 114 mms., pp. xx [xxi - xxiii Contents, xxiv blank], 339 [ 340 blank], contemporary name "James Lamont" and later name "Roger Brown" appear both on the recto of the front free end-paper and the title-page, contemporary calf; joints slightly cracked, lacks label, some general wear to binding, but a good copy. This was Hutcheson's first philosophical work, published in 1725. " In the first of the two treatises contained in the Inquiry he argued that there is an internal sense, analogous to the five external senses, which brings to mind ideas of beauty, order, harmony, and design, whenever one perceives objects, artefacts, scenes, and compositions which exhibit uniformity amid variety. In the second treatise he argued for the presence in human nature of a moral sense which determines one to recognize virtue whenever one observes a character or an action prompted by benevolence or kind affection. He found…

FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 4to, 292 x 235 mms., pp. [iv], 42, engraved vignette at top margin of first page of text, recent boards, paper label on spine. A fine copy. The Baptist minister and writer Francis Webb (1735 - 1815) trained first to be a pastor, but retired in 1777 to pursue a literary career. He didn't have much luck with this poem, and The Monthly Review gave it a paralyzing notice: "Descriptive blank verse is an unpromising species of entertainment to the reader, however amusing it may have been to the writer: -- but, moreover, Mr. F. Webb seems to be of that class of outrageous patriots who, in the estimate of beautiful scenery, prefer Somerset to Swisserland, and Norton Sub-Handon (the author's residence) to St. Dizier sur Marne. With these two recommendations with poetry that appals and patriotism that provokes, Mr. F. Webb advances a very powerful claim to our attention: -- but…
