Blindstamped, pebbled blue cloth, gilt lettering on front cover and spine, 8vo, 146 pp. Originally published in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1866 as "Grif: A Story Of Colonial Life" , the first British edition appeared in 1870. Farjeon (1838-1903) was self taught. He worked at the Nonconformist before immigrating to Australia in 1854. He went to the Victorian gold fields and started a newspaper, then went to New Zealand in 1861, where he worked on the Otago Daily Times. It was while in New Zealand that this work was written, set in working class Melbourne. Brown endpapers show moisture damage and were at some time stuck to free endpapers and were separated with consequent tearing, lacking ffep, front and rear hinges cracked but binding solid. Novel about Jewish life in London by this prolific English novelist and journalist. Farjeon (1838-1903) wrote nearly 60 novels. Farrer (1880-1920), noted traveler and horticulturist, wrote these series of reports describing conditions on the Western Front during World War I. No marks in book, binding tight. Leaf comprising pages 202-06 is detached but present, ffep and title page creased at bottom. Pages otherwise clean. One page, 8.5x11 Inches, signed, hand written from Edna Ferber to musician and composer Ethwell Idair (Eddy) Hanson (1893-1986) as follows in full: "To Eddy: No matter what happens to me - good or bad - it is so much velvet! Maroon cloth, gilt lettering on spine, 8vo, 269 pp. Author was a graduate of Miami University of Ohio (1903), and was pastor for fourteen years at two Presbyterian churches in Indiana, in the towns of Howe and Hopewell, then later at the American Union Church in Manila in the Philippines. During World War I, he served as a Y.M.C.A volunteer attached to the 32nd Division, A.E.F. This book, Ferguson's account of his World War I experiences, first appeared as supplements to the Hopewell Herald. No marks in book, binding tight. Illustrated with photographs. Small amount of staining to rear end-papers. Covers show light edge wear, especially top of spine. Book condition VG.
