Jean Antoine Fabre (1749-1834), an hydraulic engineer, systematically describes the origin, conditions of rivers and torrents and offers advice on how to change their course and/or prevent them from causing damage. He argues against the deforestation of mountain slopes, gives advice on how to cultivate agricultural areas on hillsides and discusses different dyke constructions. In the third part of his work, he deals with inland navigation and gives a survey of the situation on several French rivers. [16], 554, [6] pp.Rare Fischer issue of the first edition of the surgical works of the surgeon, physician and professor of anatomy at the University of Padua, Girolamo Fabrici (1537-1619), his first published work, edited by his student Johann Hartman Beyer, who also contributed a seven-page preface. The book is divided into five numbered "libri" covering tumors, wounds, ulcers and fistulas, fractures and dislocations respectively, still influenced by the classic works of Hippocrates and Galen. Beyer apparently published these surgical works based on his notes of Fabrici's lectures and without his permission, and Fabrici was not pleased, but he tacitly acknowledged them with the publication of an addendum in 1619, the year of his death. In 1594 Fabrici also built the University of Padua's anatomical theatre, which still survives. The collections, 600 in total, were assembled from Fabry's detailed notes of his own cases, and from information supplied by the physicians and surgeons with whom Fabry corresponded. The case histories were originally printed in Latin and published in Basle, Frankfurt & Lyon form 1606 to1627 in five illustrated volumes of 100 reports each (centuriae); a sixth posthumous volume appeared in 1641. Fabry's reports "cover the entire field of surgery, and reveal him to be a bold and skilful surgeon ingenious in meeting unfamiliar problems, and inventive in designing effective instruments for special needs"(Zimmerman & Veith).l BMN I, p. 72; STCN (7 copies, including 1 incomplete); cf. Claude Du Bosc (1682-1746?), a French engraver who worked in England from 1712, signed the beautiful engraved frontispiece (Aesop talking to the animals) and almost certainly engraved the other illustrations and/or had them engraved by his assistants under his supervision. The present frontispiece and illustrations first appeared in the 1741, but the plates for the illustrations were revised or possibly even replaced (they now have wider borders) for Du Bosc's present 1743 edition. 12 pp.Fiery defense of the burghers of Amsterdam and the policy of the Amsterdam burgomasters and City Council, and of the unity of the Dutch Union of 1597 against various pamphlets - a.o. a pamphlet by an anonymous ‘Philateles’ (lover of the truth) - perhaps written by Caspar Fagel (1634-1688), the Grand Pensionary of the Dutch Republic, known for the firmness with which he repelled the attempts of Louis XIV of France against his country and for his zeal in supporting the claims of the Stadtholder William III to the English throne. Philateles (Fagel) had supposed cooperation of the Amsterdam Magistrate with the French Ambassador Jean-Antoine de Mesmes, Comte d’Avaux (1640-1709) regarding the peace negotiations with France and Spain, ultimately leading to the Peace of Ratisbonne (Regensburg) in August 1684.Some small spots, some edges a little browned, but overall in good condition.l Knuttel, 12159 (‘UI[J?]T’; STCN 863830412; cf. 29, [1] pp.Second edition of an early treatise claiming to have squared the circle (geometrically constructed a square matching the surface area of a given circle, shown to be impossible in 1882). Falco (Valencia 1522-Madrid 1594), a humanistic poet and mathematician, and a Knight of the Order of Montesa, seems to have been a better poet than mathematician. His treatise has been called "more than commonly worthless" (De Morgan, A budget of paradoxes, 1872, p. 36), but it ends with a charming poem. In the first verse, the disappointed squared circle wonders who robbed it of its former noble form, and in the second Falco replies. With the direction line (containing the quire signature and/or catchword) shaved on 4 pages, but still in very good condition, binding fine. Faujas de Saint-Fond was a former lawyer who decided to devote himself completely to geology, mineralogy and natural history. He worked as assistant in the Museum d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris, and later, in 1793, became a professor there.Although Faujas de Saint-Fond gives an extensive description, classification and comparison of the the different kinds of basalt, he also wrote about the mineral varieties he found in several other kinds of volcanic product, such as lavas, glasses, pumice stones, breccias and pozzolans. Johann Faulhaber (1580-1635), taught mathematics at Ulm, where his family moved around 1461, after serving as vassals of the Abbot of Fulda. He became the most important of the "Cossists", mathematicians concerned with algebra. After publishing his first arithmetic text, Faulhaber founded his own school in Ulm in 1600, which grew into an internationally famous educational institute for higher mathematical sciences. He later added an artillery and engineering school. Descartes came to study with him, and Faulhaber had a lively contact with Kepler. Favier arrived in China in 1862 and became the Vicar Apostolic of Northern Chihli in 1899. Originally educated as an architect, he helped to rebuild the Xishiku Church, also called Beitang, in 1887. The work is divided into two volumes. The first deals with the history of Beijing, starting with the topography, followed by old myths and legends, the subsequent dynasties, and an extensive account on Christianity and the different missionary orders in China. In the second a description of the city is given, including the statues, gardens, churches and palaces that are to be found there. Antoine Laurent Apollinaire Fée (1789-1874) is a French botanist and author of works on botany and mycology, Darwinism and practical and historical pharmacology - his Code pharmaceutique, ou pharmacopée française (Paris, 1826) among them. He served as a medical orderly during Napoleon's campaign in Spain, then established a pharmacy in Paris. He was schooled in the profession in Strasbourg, receiving his degree in 1815. He met the botanist Christiaan Hendrik Persoon in 1823, and came to be strongly influenced by him. Fée later became an instructor at teaching hospitals, firstly in Lille in 1825 then Strasbourg in 1832, when he was promoted to M.D. and professor of botany. It contains the story of three French missionaries who left Paris around 1660 to go as missionaries to the Far East. One of them died on the journey, but the other two, Louis Chevreuil and Antoine Hainques, made it to Southeast Asia. Chevreuil arrived in 1664 in Siam, and within five months he traveled to Cochinchina, where he had to leave due to persecution of Christians, discussed in the second part of the book. Hainques arrived in Cochinchina in 1665. Chevreuil was sent to Cambodia, which is covered in the third part of the book. The book is based on their letters and reports. O'Callaghan translated the remaining volumes in 1848. For the present edition Berthold Fernow (1837-1908), editor and writer of several other historical works and articles, made a completely new translation of volume 1 and revised the other volumes.The bindings are rubbed, but otherwise good. Some occasional spots throughout, but otherwise in very good condition, wholly untrimmed and partly unopened.l Not in Sabin.

The impressions of the panels are very crisp and clear, especially that on the lower half of the front board.Ad 1: First Basel edition of an account of the sacerdotium (priesthood) and administration in ancient Rome, written by the Florentine humanist Andrea Domenico Fiocco (d. 1452), assuming the name of a first century Roman writer, Lucius Fenestella. It is followed by a work on the same subject by the Italian humanist Giulio Pomponio Leto (1428-1498), and a list of abbreviations by Valerius Probus. The Italian humanist Marcus Antonius Flaminius (Seravalla 1498 - Rome 1550) first published his commentary in 1545. He gives a short summary of each psalm (argumentum), followed by the Latin text of the psalm, its commentary (explanatio) and a paraphrase. He also wrote an additional paraphrase in poetry of 30 psalms. The work is dedicated to Cardinal Alexander Farnese, one of Flaminius's protectors. It was popular and Adams lists editions for 1547, 1551, 1557, 1558 (present copy), 1561 and 1567. The second work contains a series of neo-Latin poems on biblical and religious subjects, dedicated to Margaretha of Valois, the sister of Henry II of France, who knew Latin and Greek and whose praises were sung by many poets.
