A good copy with the exlibris of A. Kühnholtz-Lordat pasted on the inside front cover of all three volumes, A good copy. The sales catalogue of the library of the French court physician Camille Falconet (1671 - 1762) who had been a book collector for more than 70 years. The catalogue was compiled by Jean Capperonnier, and edited by Jacques-Marie Barrois. Falconet bequeathed to the Bibliothèque du Roi all those books not already in that collection, and stipulated that the rest were to be sold; the items in the catalogue (11,000) destined for the Bibliothèque du Roi are set off within square brackets (very unusual in a catalogue). (page size 215 x 270 mm, most plates about 170 x 125 mm). 30 leaves of numbered engraved plates (22 plates of cupids - including engraved title, 8 plates of masks). Plus, bound as preliminaries, are the engraved titlepage and the second plate of Abraham Bosse's Differents Manières de Dessiner et Peindre. Later 3/4 buckram with marbled boards. Buckram a bit soiled. Plate 13 cut a bit short and plate 18 with a stain in the upper margin, not affecting the plate. Re-issue of this appealing series of engravings by Abraham Bosse after designs by the Italian artist and draughtsman Paolo Farinato (1524 - 1606). Farinati's chiaroscuro drawings were often used as 'modelli'. The first edition was published in 1644. Presentation copy from the author to the Duc de Luynes with dedication by Ambroise Firmin Didot.First separate edition of this history of woodengraving. The author discusses the principal schools of engraving: The German School with Albert Dürer; The Dutch School with Hans Holbein; the Italian, French and Spanish Schools. He gives a lot of information about works, printers, engravers, places etc.

Title printed in red and black, woodcut initials and tail-pieces. xviii pp. introduction, 66 leaves with descriptions of the plates. With 66 tissue-garded beautiful colourplates: chromolithographs, sometimes heightened in gold. Neatly printed on thick handmade paper in 500 numbered copies. This is copy number 124, with the exlibris of the Lakeside Press Chicago. The bindings represented in the plates contained in this volume are all products of English or Scottish craftsmen, or of foreigners who were domiciled in England. Some (water)staining but still a good clean copy bound in nineteenth century 3/4 red morocco & red buckram boards. Edges stained red.Second, last and best edition of this collection of engravings of medals commemorating the real and imagined triumphs of Louis XV's reign.

1737. Venezia, Cristoforo Zane, 1737. xxxii,752pp. 19th century half cloth binding with marbled sides (a bit rubbed). With fine full-page portrait of the author. Vast bibliographical project by the Italian librarian and archeologist, Fontanini, 1666-1736, listing Italian grammatical and rhetorical treatises, translations of the classics, orations, poetry and prose, drama, etc. [Haym 164, no. 7.] The work was first published in 1706. Fontanini continued improving it until, 30 years later he revised in completely. The work is divided in three parts: The first is on the origin and development of the Italian language; the second deals with its growth through the works that have been written in it, and the third part is a list of classical books in all genres with bibliographical and literary notes. The 1736 edition is so much enlarged that in a way it is a new book. The title has also changed from the earlier editions. Indespensable work of reference on Italian literature.

Berlin, Haude et Spener 1756. (xxiv),380,(iv)pp. Sm. 8vo. Contemporary mottled calf, edges red. (binding a bit worn: hinges a bit weak, corners and edges rubbed). Numerous annotations in ink (and a few in pencil) in a contemprary hand and with many underlined passages. One of the earliest and most successful catalogues of best books, giving the criteria for the design of an Enlightenment library, a subject that was popular in the eighteenth century. Formey writes about the assembling of a library of 100 works and discusses the arrangement and choice of books. The sort of books to collect are divided into twelve sections: theology, philosophy, literature, periodicals, history, novels, poetry, eloquence, morals and taste, military science and mathematics, geography and voyages, and law and medicine and all books admitted to the library are fully discussed. 1752. Rome, J.M. Salivioni, 1752. Halftitle, title pp v-xvi, pp. 1-111, 1 blank, 113 - 119, 1 blank, 120 (misnumbered 211) - 130 pp, 1 errata leaf. 6 plates numbered I-VI, 4 of which are folding. (plates 1 & 6 with old restaurations). Half calf, decorated paper boards (binding rubbed, some waterstaining and foxing). Edges sprinkled red. A copy with large margins. Only edition of a fine work on mosaics by the learned archaeologist Furietti. The first plate depicts the celebrated mosaic of four doves perched on a drinking vessel which the author had discovered at the Villa Adria in 1737 and which Pliny mentions in his Natural History. It is now in the Capitoline Museum. [c.f.Berlin Katalog 3946; Graesse II, 647 (mistakenly indicating 8 plates)]

Orléans, chez Claude-Anne Le Gall, 1770. 36 pp. Contemporary wrappers (vellum spine, marbled paper and a yellow paper with handwritten note on it in ink in a contemporary hand: "Prospectus de Mr. Fyot. Novateur en géométrie; mais intéressante". Wrs. sl. soiled, ex-libris Michel Chasles on inside front cover. Handwritten note in ink at the top of the titlepage: "Ouvrage singulier, a garder". Scarce little booklet, of which I have only found two copies in libraries in France. The author was a former professor of mathematics at the Royal Academy of Lyon. Michel Chasles (1793 - 1880) was a French mathematician. He is is one of 72 scientists whose name is on the first floor of the Eiffel Tower. [OCLC only mentions two copies in France, none outside of France].
