Four separate works on animal physiology First edition of each of these four works on animal motion and physiology by the founder of embryology and major Renaissance anatomist, bound together. The four editions were later re-issued together in 1625, with a collected title page, index, "ad lectorem", and addenda, this volume apparently separate to that issue without any of the additions. All four works "may be considered as parts of the uncompleted but monumental Totius animalis fabricae theatrum which he meant to publish and to which he devoted many years" (DSB, IV, p. 508). Fabricius had previously suggested that students could eventually bind all his individual tracts together (in the dedication to De venarum ostiolis, 1603), perhaps advice the contemporary owner followed here. London: Ithaca Press,, 1984. Exile from Iraq First edition of this intriguing collection of Arabic poems on exile and dislocation, complemented by the poet's own surrealist collages. This a presentation copy inscribed by the author, "To John Lyle, with best wishes from, Salah Faiq 7/7/1984". John Lyle (1932-2002) was an English surrealist and bookseller. An Iraqi-born poet, Fa'iq (b. 1945) has identified himself with the Kirkuk Group of multilingual artists working across media. The present volume contains poems which he composed in San'a' and London between 1977 and 1983, including "A Blind Man Searching for a Voice" and "Once, the Moon Stood Still". WorldCat locates only 5 copies of this edition. Octavo. Original publisher's green illustrated card wrappers, lettered in black on spine. With 12 plates showing collages by the poet. Slightly bumped at foot of spine, edges a bit foxed. A very good copy.

Fairbairn's first book, documenting his experiments on the properties of iron boats, and the possibility of applying steam-power for traction, to improve communication on canal lines, is "written in a plain, perspicuous, and unpretending manner - no small merit in this age of quackery" (Pole). Sir William Fairbairn (1789–1874), first baronet of Ardwick, was a Scottish civil engineer, structural engineer and shipbuilder. "Fairbairn was elected president of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in 1854, and was president of the Manchester Literary and Philosophical Society from 1855 to 1860. This copy accompanied by four other contemporary publications on unarmed combat. As Fairbairn explains in his introduction, "the majority of the methods shown are drastic in the extreme. In contrast to judo, they recognise no accepted rules. They are not intended to provide amusement for all-in wrestling spectators, but for use in these dangerous times as part of national preparedness against our enemies". The author was in charge of the Shanghai Municipal Police Riot Squad and was their chief instructor in self-defence. He was the first foreigner living outside of Japan to be awarded a Black Belt Degree by the Kodokan Jiu-Jitsu University of Tokyo. The edition was intended as a stylistic companion to Dent's edition of Le Morte d'Arthur (1894-95), illustrated by Aubrey Beardsley, and as a competitor to the George Allen edition of The Faerie Queene, illustrated by Walter Crane and published the same year. Fairfax-Muckley (1862-1926) was an influential leader of the arts and crafts "Birmingham School", having studied painting and drawing at the Birmingham School of Art in the early 1880s. London: Printed for Longman, Hurst, Reese, Orme, and Brown,, 1817. First edition of this scarce work outlining the "origin, progress and actual state" of the Spanish American wars of independence. Listed on the title page as an anonymous "South-American", the author is Manuel Palacio Fajardo (1784-1819), Venezuelan patriot, congress member, and advocate for independence. Fajardo became a representative to the first Constituent Congress of Venezuela in 1810 after the independence war broke out. He then went into exile after the fall of the First Republic in 1812, first in the United States before travelling to France and then Britain. He returned to the Venezuelan Congress, reestablished by Simon Bolivar in 1819, and made final revisions to Bolivar's inauguration speech. Awarded a Caldecott Medal Honor in 2001, Falconer's series of picture books would run to eleven titles and was adapted for a Nickelodeon television show in 2008. Signed copies of the first edition are rare. An early review of the title in the Los Angeles Times hailed an "extraordinary debut for both Ian Falconer and his unforgettable porcine heroine". A review of a later title in the New York Times described the main character as "the irrepressible Olivia - part Babe, part Liza Minnelli". Ian Falconer (1959-2023), originally known as a theatre set and costume designer, also created cover art for The New Yorker.
