[Fashion] Original illustrations of vintage early to mid-century, women's fashion. Vintage Fashion Archive of 6 original Gouache Watercolor Paintings and Sketches. This archive includes 6 Vintage Fashion Sketches, circa 1920's-1950's. Each ranges from 10" x 7" to 10" x 15". Six paintings on hard mats, one on thick watercolor paper. All sketched in pencil and various colors of gouache paint. These illustrations provide a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyles women aspired to in these eras. Two large paintings dated "4/11/54" captures detailing accounts of posh 1950's attire. The model boasts a matching rose-hued set, comprised of a slim pencil skirt and corseted blazer. The artist, "Virginia", meticulously details accents on the blazer's arms and its rear. The blazer illustrated is an ode to the 1930's, as "the exaggerated shoulder-on suits and dresses-was a hallmark of 1930s fashion achieved through padding, layers of fabric, and other embellishments". They also illustrate elegant gloves and a… Read More

GREVIN, Alfred. Les Filles D'eve Album de Travestissements Plus ou Moins Historiques. Paris: Bureaux du Journal Amusant, 1867. 12.5" x 9.25" inches. Blue paper covers with gilt titles. Covers are slightly toned with minor edgewear, including one small closed tear at bottom edge. 20 plates with tissue guards depicting French fashion from the times of the Romans to the Bourbon Restoration. Several editions of this work, some with 24 plates and some with 20, with this copy being a complete 20 plate edition. The drawings are light-hearted and creative, with one standout example that weaves a frigate into the elaborate hairdo of a lady of the court in the age of Louis XVI. "Travestissements" at the time meant fancy dress. These twenty plates offer an elegant and fantastical look at French women's fashion throughout the ages. Overall in very good condition.

Description:
Felix Klein, mathematician known for his work with group theory, non-Euclidean geometry, and complex analysis writes this letter to his colleague, a former student, mentioning Einstein's Theory and the International Mathematic Unterrichts Commission. Handwritten autograph letter signed, 2 pages, on 2 sides of a single leaf. Dated November 10,1918. Apparently Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, published earlier that same year, had given Klein some ideas to consider for his own work. Klein had been researching and publishing in the area of mathematical physics since the 1890s, so it is not surprising that he should have been part of an ongoing scholarly dialogue which included Einstein. Klein was also the mind behind the mammoth project of creating a Mathematical Encyclopedia covering every known concept of mathematics and physics. He published the volumes from 1894 until his death in 1925 (publication actually continued until 1935), in an effort which is still proves of enduring value today.… Read More

A collection of 175 letters sent to Shelter Island, New York native, Glorian Duvall Devereux from various friends and suitors while she was attending finishing school at the Lasell Seminary School in Newton, Massachusetts from 1926-1927. Glorian Duvall began studying at Lasell Seminary (which she sometimes refers to as the "cemetery") in the fall of 1925 and by the winter of the following year had started corresponding with numerous friends she had met during the previous summer holiday, including some Amherst University fraternity men. Al, from Beta Theta Pi, writes, "It sure must be tough to be shut up in such a cemetery as you describe your fair Alma Mater to be... I just know that all your teachers are giving their lives to make model and educated ladies of you all. After your terribly wild summer you probably do find things a bit irksome... Description:
Two real photo postcards showing the female pioneer, gunfighter and silver miner known as Captain Jack. Early 1900s. Each measure 5.5 x 3.5 inches. Ellen Elliott, known as Captain Jack, moved to the American west from England in the 1860's. One image shows Elliott standing beside her burro with a small shingled cabin behind her, expression characteristically stoic. Writing on the card reads "Captain Jack at Home." Upon arrival in Colorado, Captain Jack ran a boarding house and discovered a profitable silver mine, engaged in gunfights and survived a tomahawk attack. As frontierswoman Ellen Elliott "Captain" Jack put it, "A .44 equalizes frail women and brute men.." Captain Jack could handle a gun. The female prospector, who made a fortune in silver mining, was arrested repeatedly for shooting men who tried to rob, cheat, or murder her, but the charges never stuck. She later showed her savvy for western Americana tourism, running a resort that catered to tourists where she gave tours and sold her… Read More
