Description:
1761. London: A Millar, J. Buckland and J. Waugh, 1761. 8vo., newly bound in calf-backed marbled boards; lettering and ruling in gilt direct to spine; pp. viii, 104; some very light creasing along the spine; pages slightly cropped at edges (not affecting text); the binding rather tight; else a lovely copy of this genuinely scarce title. First edition. Farmer was a dissenting theologian and preacher at Salters' Hall, London. His writings were distinct from other theologians writing at the time in that he proposed that the temptation by the devil was an allegory; a prophetic vision as opposed to an actual event. He viewed supernatural evil as non-existent, but miracles in daily life as a reality, and these views evolved over time towards a belief in natural law having governance over real-life events. This text was later revised in several editions with additional observations, but the first remains rather scarce.

Original maroon cloth, front cover lettered in gilt; pp. 82, [4, advertisements], illustrations after photographs; spine a little faded, otherwise a very good copy, bookplate to front fly-leaf. Very rare first edition, privately published, of this celebration of the first aerial postal service. 'The Centenary of the Coronation Aerial Post 1911 is an historic event in the record of pioneer aviation in Great Britain and the cooperation of the Postmaster General and the British Post Office. The First United Kingdom Aerial Post owed its existence to the foresight and initiative of Captain (later Sir) Walter Windham, RN. It was Capt Windham who successfully organised the world’s first Official Aerial Post in India during February 1911 at Allahabad, in connection with the United Provinces Exhibition … On his return to England soon afterwards, it occurred to Capt Windham that a similar project might be an appropriate and novel addition to the celebrations… Read More

Description:
London, Secker & Warburg, 1943. Small-ish 8vo. Orginal boards with illustrated dust-wrappers; pp. 128, sketch maps; a typical war time book production and rare, even more so in the illustrated dust-wrappers. First edition of a work on the political and spiritual situation of India at the brink of independence, with an essay about Gandhi, and future problems of independence. The book is dedicated to 'Zulfaqar', who is actually Zulfiqar Ali Bukhari, the legendary Radio broadcaster of British India and later Pakistan. He had been born into a family of Sufi mystics and was as well a writer, poet and musician. Fielden had 'served as subaltern at Gallipoli and decided that war was insanity. He was doing brilliantly in the League of Nations and got bored with it. Relief work in Eastern Europe - with Nansen - seemed to him worth while, and so did working for the BBC in its pioneering days; but when the BBC became "a pudding" of bureaucracy he shied off to India where he created All India Radio… Read More
