Described on the front cover as a "remarkable adult novel", The Image of the Beast is an extraordinary book combining the surreal, the erotic, and the grotesque to create a genre described as "biosexopsychic science-fiction".

Original olive green dust-jacket lettered in yellow and light green, very slight wear at head of spine and upper corners; a very good copy.

Dark green cloth, black labels with gilt lines and titling to upper cover and spine. Illustrated dust-jacket, with some very minor marking but overall in very good condition. Slipcase, cream label with black lettering, some slight marking and scuffing on the back but otherwise very good. Internally near fine with the colour plates in particularly fresh and good condition. The plates show typical interiors in a French style from German Houses of the periods of the 18th and 19th Centuries.

Contemporary calf, spine with four raised bands, compartments decorated in gilt, second compartment with red morocco label lettered in gilt. Corners slightly bumped, small hole to joint at foot of spine, a few marks to covers. Small tear to margin of B2 not affecting text. Slightly cropped (when the book was bound) but text unaffected. Otherwise, internally very good. Front free endpaper has ownership inscription of Miss R. Assheton in a beautiful copperplate hand. A nice copy of a scarce book, this revised second edition, intended "for the use of schools" appearing in the same year as the first. The Governess is a collection of stories all taking place in a school run by the nominatively determined Miss Teachum. [Winterton, Lincolnshire] n.p. undated [pre 1804], 1802. Original pen and coloured ink drawing (146x108mm) of a mosaic floor on thick paper, mounted on card (198x140mm) and framed. Beneath the drawing is inscribed "William Fowler Fecitt (sic)" and the description "A Tessellated Floor of an Ancient Bath in Nants (sic) in the South of France supposed to be Built by Antonious (sic) Pius". The hand-coloured engraving of this mosaic appears in volume one of Fowler's Engravings of the Mosaic Pavements &c published in 1804. This beautiful drawing is in excellent condition with the colours particularly fresh. Original drawings by Fowler are rare and this is a particularly fine example. � William Fowler (1761-1832) was born in Lincolnshire where he ran his own business as a builder and architect. He also produced, in his spare time, a large quantity of drawings of old buildings, tombs and brasses, stained glass, and Roman mosaic pavements. Prettily bound in contemporary red morocco, both covers delicately tooled in gilt with a floral border framing an inner border of drawer-handle and flower motifs and small gilt dots, with arabesque cornerpieces. A central panel is decorated with drawer-handles, arabesque cornerpieces, leafy sprays and rococo patterns constructed with tiny dotted lines. All edges gilt, turn-ins tooled in gilt, marbled endpapers. Slight bumping and rubbing to corners and joints but otherwise a beautiful little binding in excellent condition. Internally very good but with a small portion of the title page repaired with later paper, affecting a few letters. Slightly browned in places but overall a very good copy. Title page has inscribed ownership initials "W.J.K" and on the verso of the front free endpaper is the surname beginning with "K" which possibly reads "Kenyon" but is unclear. The contents are fine. There is also a black and white photograph of an unidentified young girl loosely inserted. Whether this is by Banier is unclear. This is a clean and tight copy of this well-known collection of photographs by France's best known social climber. Dusseldorf: Selbstverlag (self-published) 1917, 1917. 226 x 150 mm. pp. [viii], 124. Illustrated with 130 (in fact 131) images mostly showing tatting patterns. Text in German. Original grey/brown paper over boards, spine in brown leather. Upper cover lettered in black and white with tatting illustration attached. Some slight scuffing to lower cover and bumping to foot of spine but overall a very good copy, internally near fine. Tatting seems to involve knotting together pieces of thread to make allegedly eye-like patterns which, together produce moderately pretty but completely useless items of decoration. Indulging in this as a hobby is, it would seem, an example of "demonstrative idleness". Apparently it is popular again. This is a nice copy of a book on an unfathomable subject.

A Near-fine copy with some marks to the first leaf - else crisp and clean. Housed as issued in a red brocade sleeve with a laid-on paper title label. In a Very Good grey slipcase with some very light wear to the corners. SIGNED by the artist to the second leaf.

Foxing and browning (as usual for this edition of Freneau's work) but overall a nice copy of the expanded edition of the poems of "The Poet of the American Revolution". Front pastedown has the label of Christopher Clark Geest and the front free endpaper the library stamp of J.H.Hunt M.D. Philip Freneau (1752-1832) is regarded as one of the fathers of American Romanticism and his use of dark, Gothic themes marks him as an influence on Poe. He was important for the development of the Transcendentalist and Primitivist movements in American literature. Along with his first book, The Interpretation of Dreams, the lectures on Pyscho-Analysis and the late Civilization and its Discontents, this text changed forever our conception of the child. No longer Rousseau's innocent child of Nature, he or she became a mass of unfocussed and unspecified sexuality which needed to be socially conditioned. A major cultural document.

Rare, Worldcat locating only two copies, one in Denmark and the other in the Metropolitan Museum in New York. This modest little booklet listing the works of art displayed at Den Frie Udstilling in 1893, captures an important moment in European art: it records the public bringing together of the work of Gauguin and Van Gogh and it also marks a crucial step in the establishment of the reputation of Van Gogh. London Francis Frith and Co. 1897, 1897. Photograph of Queen Victoria in her carriage outside St Paul's Cathedral during the celebrations for her Diamond Jubilee. Photograph measures 560x450mm (to top edge, top corners are rounded) in a cream mount and contemporary carved wooden frame (835x715mm). The photographs of Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee were printed and published by Francis Frith and Co, the firm founded by the great travel photographer in 1859 and which quickly became one of the largest photographic companies in the world employing numerous photographers. Frith himself died in 1898. As part of the celebrations for her Diamond Jubilee in 1897, Queen Victoria was driven in her State Coach to St Paul's where a service took place on the steps of the Cathedral. The Queen was too old and infirm and couldn't leave the Coach so her Bishops came to her. Crowds are everywhere, even in precarious temporary stands on the roofs of the surrounding buildings.
