Jackson: University Press of Mississippi, 1990. 299 pp, 9 1/4" H. "Richard Wright, born in Mississippi in 1908, was largely self-taught. In this valuable work Michel Fabre, Wright's biographer and foremost among Wright scholars, details the volumes in Wright's library, and the facts of Wright's reading habits. This listing of books that formed and influenced him includes second-hand books he bought while living in extreme poverty in Chicago, some borrowed books never returned, books purchased in New York and in Paris, books Wright deemed required reading for a growing novelist, gift books, and others in a wide and comprehensive list on such subjects as contemporary American literature, classic European works, Afro-American studies, psychology, psychiatry, criminology, and social sciences. (D)etails information about when and where the volumes were acquired. In compiling this listing Fabre goes beyond the actual contents of Wright's library, for he includes also titles drawn…

Description:
Shepperton: Ian Allan, 1991. 128 pp, 4to (11 3/4" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, drawings. "Weaving his narrative around the detailed eyewitness accounts of aircrews, groundcrews and those who built the Stirling, (the author) reveals the troubled life story of the Shorts' big bomber. Through the eyes of a factory worker at Queen's Island, Belfast, we witness the birth of one of the RAF's first four-engined 'heavies'. We climb the crew ladder, follow the skipper up the long dark fuselage to the cockpit and fly with him and his crew on one of the first Stirling raids over Germany. Lie on your belly in the bomb aimer's position as the skipper dodges flak and fighters at low level: 'We crossed the enemy coast at Wilhelmshaven and were soon flying at low level between two of the Friesian Islands - the guns on each island appeared to be firing horizontally or down at us.' Sit in on a top secret briefing for an SD Stirling crew at Tempsford, and…

New York: William Morrow, 1968. 195 pp, 8vo (812" H). B&w photographs, maps. "(The) first Battle of Ypres (1914) is sometimes considered to have ended as a costly stalemate, but, in fact, the British Army's act of suicide in this battle resulted in victory; the Germans, in failing a breakthrough to Calais, lost forever any prospects of the outright victory they had expected to win in France. Brigadier Farrar-Hockely's skillful account of this decisive encounter, which includes a brilliant use of contemporary sources, not least among them the dramatic diaries of British soldiers, caused the 'Oxford Times' to comment: 'his book is not only a fine piece of military history; it is as exciting as a thriller'." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, book is slightly cocked, very light browning to top and fore-edge of text block, some small areas of slight discoloration on boards. Description:
New York: W.W. Norton, 1990. 317 pp, 8vo (8 3/16" H). B&w photographs, reproductions, map. "The Gurkha regiments in the British Army are, quite simply, the finest infantrymen in the world. Recruited in the kingdom of Nepal since the early nineteenth century, these short, wiry hillmen have served the kings and queens of Britain with such loyalty, tenacity, and incredible bravery that often the sound of their battle cry 'Ayo Gurkhali!' (roughly translated as 'Here come the Gurkhas!') has caused enemy soldiers to flee. The Gurkhas fought beside the British in the Indian Mutiny, in France and Mesopotamia during World War I, and in every theater during World War II. They have fought as well in countless small wars - 'the savage wars of peace' - including the Northwestern Frontier of India, Malaya, Borneo, and most recently the Falkland Islands. Their courage is legendary. Since 1911, when they first became eligible, thirteen Gurkhas have been awarded the Victoria…

London: Arms and Armour, 1998. 256 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w plates. "From more than 2,000 years of military history, (the author) has selected some one hundred examples of battles centred on river crossings. They range in size fom small-scale actions such as the battle for Powick Bridge in the early months of the English Civil War to massive, army-scale operations including the final crossing of the Rhine at Remagen during the Second World War. One of the biggest battles during the Napoleonic Wars - indeed, the biggest battle to that date with more than 300,000 men in combat - was fought across the Danube in 1809, culminating in the battle of Wagram. Later, as Napoleon's fortunes began to ebb, there took place the desperate and tragic crossing of the Berezina in 1812 when Napoleon's depleted army, retreating from Moscow, fought to cross the freezing river to escape the pursuing and encirling Russians and the hell of a Russian winter. The American Civil War also…

Description:
Newton Abbot: David & Charles, 1972. 215 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H). B&w illustrations. "Once aptly described as 'chess with a thousand pieces', wargaming can be made as complicated and elaborate as desired, or so simple that even young children can take part. This book - the ideal introduction to the hobby - explains what wargaming is all about, how armies can be assembled and how, on any reasonably-sized table, realistic engagements can be fought by tactical manoeuvring. The basic rules by which forces are moved and casualties assessed are explained, there is practical advice on making one's own soldiers and on conversions, and guidance on how to prepare and lay out realistic battlefield scenes. Another great attraction of the wargaming hobby is the research it invites into famous campaigns of the past, and not the least valuable part of this book is its brief survey of warfare from earliest times to the present day. Here the military tactics of each period are…

New York: Frederick Warne, 1973. 192 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). 60 b&w illustrations. "Many wargamers, particularly during the early stages of their interest in the hobby, are unable to find live opponents to fight on their table-top battlefields. Their efforts at wearing two different hats, as they manipulate both armies, and with the full knowledge of what each intends to do, soon palls. Their interest in wargaming retreats. Then there are those wargamers whose enthusiasm is so great that fighting one, or even two, battles a week is not sufficient, and who are led to seek a means of carrying on their table-top battles when a live opponent is not available. (This book) caters to both, describing innumerable methods of manoeuvring two wargames armies, under such conditions of secrecy and surprise that the result of the battle is in the balance until the last cannon is fired. It opens many doors to ingenious and practical methods of doing battle with model soldiers, raising the pastime in…

Barnsley: Pen & Sword, 2008. 148 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "After joining the Grenadier Guards in 1937, Cyril Feebery served in the British Expeditionary Force before being evacuated wounded from Dunkirk. Undeterred he volunteered for the newly formed Commandos and, on completion of their rigorous training in Scotland, was sent to the Middle East to be a member of Layforce. After its disbandment, he joined the Folboat Section, later the Special Boat Section, and trained as a canoeist under Captain Roger Courtney MC to conduct commando operations from submarines. When the SBS was later absorbed into the Special Air Service, Feebery took part in raids on Benghazi and Tripoli. As part of the SBS, Feebery served as Squadron Sergeant Major under Major the Earl Jellicoe. Captured by Italian forces after a raid on airfields in Sardinia, he later escaped from his POW camp in Italy and successfully made his way back to Allied lines.
