Book is Near Fine: no interior markings, folds, etc. Rear boards with two small imprints at top edge. The half title has a few light scuffs acquired in the printing process that do not really show up in the image (please see image anyway). The dust jacket is very good: small closed tear at back fold neatly repaired. Jacket shows light general wear. Two scuffs at top of back cover. All in archival cover now. Notes: author was journalist embedded with Combined Unit Pacification Program (CUPP) in Vietnam in late 1970. What is CUPP you may ask? Think Marine Corps combined with Peace Corps and you are almost there. Well that was the idea anyway.

Front edge paper has 5 x 2 mm brown spot. Dust jacket is Very Good: not price clipped, light wear along edges and creases. Back panel with moderate soiling and light water stain (not affecting volume in any way). Could probably be improved with cleaning if you knew what you were about. First UK edition, 1st printing, hardcover with dust jacket in archival cover. Volume is Very Good: endpapers and paper edges with foxing; no interior writing, markings, or other issues. Front board has small crease (see image) that looks like it was tied with string in past. Dust jacket is Good: not price clipped. Chips and closed tears along edges, and spine tips. Neat old archival tape repair. Small water spots on back not affecting book in any way. Not as bad as it sounds. A perfectly reasonable (and kind of cool) reading copy. Notes: Firsts Magazine (March, 2004) identifies 1st and 2nd states of 1st printing with this being a second state.

Mandibulata volume 1. 1828. Nineteenth century marbled boards with modern cloth spine. Front blank and pastedown water stained with slight bleeding onto title page (see image). Many leaves uncut. Plates in excellent condition. Paginates: blank, iv, 184, (4), 9 plates. Complete. This set became famous for Darwin's contributions to later volumes. A very good copy. Purchased new by me the year I stopped collecting coins because my life became extremely busy. Rarely used book with pristine interior - no markings of any kind. Exterior has 40 years of shelf wear and slight sun to the spine. If you are looking to make a set of these books this one would be a candidate. An excellent copy.
