Description:
London: Printed for T. Becket and P.A. Dehondt, 1761. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. Modern quarter calf with cloth boards, spine label with title in gilt on red background; title page slightly loose. Two bookplates, one with the letter "W" and the other bearing a stylized "A." Excellent condition. THE SWEDISH KING IN EXILE. First edition in English. This fascinating collection of letters was written to Charles XII and others in his circle by Baron Fabrice during their exile from Sweden. After a disastrous campaign against Russia, a wounded Charles and a few of his men retreated to the Ottoman Empire where they sought refuge under Ahmed III. They spent the years 1710-1714 at Bender, in Moldavia near the Black Sea, where Charles attempted to enlist the aid of the Turks against the Russians. "Fabrice won the full confidence and sympathy of the otherwise sealed and restrained the king" (NDB). Thus, four years of "singular particulars, secret transactions, and curious anecdotes in relation to that Northern…

Description:
Two works in one. 4to. [vi], 64; 16, [2] leaves. Title page to each work. Three lovely woodblock text initials. Half-calf with paper boards; some leaves lightly water-stained along lower corners, otherwise an excellent copy.First edition of two rare treatises on syphilis. "In this classic work on 'the French disease,' Fallopius wrote more knowingly of the Europe-wide scourge of syphilis than previous authors on the subject and was one of the first to oppose the use of mercury in its treatment." Posthumously printed, Fallopius (1523-1562) was a surgeon and professor at Ferrar, Pisa and Padua where he succeeded his own teacher Vesalius. He here asserts his belief that syphilis was brought to Europe from America by the associates of Columbus, and strongly recommends the use of guaiac wood for its cure, though he also mentions certain other remedies. The second treatise on the same subject is by Fracanzano (1500?-1569), who became professor of medicine at Padua in 1539.There is a variant issue of De morbo…

Description:
8vo. With 1 full-page plate. Contemporary half morocco and marbled boards; an excellent copy from the library of the Mount Wilson Observatory with the presentation bookplate to the Library from Adriaan van Maanen. First edition, though a portion appeared in a journal a few years earlier. Ferrero (1839-1902) was director of the Italian Geographical Institute and a president of the Italian Geodetic Commission. His work here deals with the presentation of the method of least squares as it applies to geodesy. Least squares method is a form of mathematical regression analysis used to determine the line of best fit for a set of data, providing a visual demonstration of the relationship between the data points. Each point of data represents the relationship between a known independent variable and an unknown dependent variable.
Adriaan van Maanen (1884-1946) was a Dutch astronomer who spent time working with George Hale at the Mount Wilson Observatory, part of the… Read More

Description:
London: John Chapman, 1848. FIRST EDITION OF THE ENGLISH TRANSLATION. Publisher's cloth, embossed emblem of the Catholic Series on covers, corners slightly worn, rebacked with the orginial label; interior very good. From the library of Chichester Fortescue, Lord Carlingford, with his bookplate and signature dated March, 1849 on the paste-down, and some pencil annotations at the end of the text. First edition of the English translation by William Smith. Fichte identifies three distinct stages in the development of human existence and the striving for conscious knowledge both theoretical and practical: 1. doubt 2. knowledge 3. faith. Fichte published his famous Wissenschaftslehre, an "essay towards a critique of all revelation" which was an exposition and clarification of Kant's work, in 1794. He followed up over the next few years covering the theoretical side of his system. Here Fichte reaches for the source of human knowledge, arriving at two conflicting views of human existence: Humans are subject…

Halle: H.W. Schmidt, 1867. FIRST EDITION. Complete with 14 hand colored plates. Later cloth boards, gilt lettering on spine; a very good copy from the Library of Dr. James M. Dolan Jr. with his blind stamp on the title page. First Edition of the most valuable contribution to the avifauna of Polynesian. Hartlaub prepared the preface, the introduction, and the diagnoses, with the remaining part of the text being written by Finsch. The work is based chiefly on material collected by Dr. E. Gräffe but deals with all birds known from the area in question, altogether 99 species as well as ten doubtful ones (Anker). The work is dedicated to the Hamburger merchant Johann Cesar Godeffroy (1813-1885), founder of the Museum Godeffroy, which began as a personal collection of birds, fish, shells and other animals. The authors have described all previously recorded information from the naturalists who acceompanied Cook on his first voyage and enlarged it to include specific areas of Central Polynesia, including…

Paris: Marpon, 1884. ELEVENTH EDITION. With 8 color plates including 2 woodbury photographs of the moon, all with tissue guards, numerous black and white text illustrations and charts, many full-page. Original publisher's pictorial cloth, worn; interior with some browning, otherwise a very good copy. Eleventh edition. Flammarion pursues his stand on astronomical pluralism, the belief that there exists numerous other worlds harboring life and, in particular, intelligent life. With maps, illustrations, photographs, graphs and diagrams, he creates a significantly scientific basis for the ability of life to flourish on other planets. For each of the planets in the solar system, he details the historical basis of the concept of alien life, as well as the geography, meteorology, and other scientific details of the planet.Flammarion (1842-1925) had a passion for astronomy from childhood and was largely self-taught. His appealing literary style made him the most important and successful scientific…
