Published the same year as the first London edition, this classic work in structural engineering, did much to establish wrought-iron as the leading structural material in the second half of the nineteenth century. Fairbairn' advocacy is based in great part on constructing fireproof buildings. A final section explores designs for fireproof mills, in particular a detailed description, and fine illustrations, of the newly completed Saltaire Mill for which he had been the engineer. Falke was perhaps the most important German writer on taste in the Aesthetic era. He has written a history of interior decoration--beginning with the Greco-Roman house through the eighteenth century. Critical observations on style and harmony are filtered through aesthetic principles. Successive chapters deal with decorating the house in various stages: the floor, wall ornaments, ceilings, furniture and decorations on the table. His work reflec many of the "artistic" principles in vogue in England and elsewhere: the dependence of Form on function; the importance of good design in everyday living; and the preferred use of historical styles as inspiration, rather tha strict models, for modern decor. [Berlin, 1996.] Johann Rudolf Fasch was a superior officer in the corps of engineers and architects in Dresden during the early eighteenth century. His five part ser Anderer Versuch Seiner Architect.... was published from 1722 through 1729; e volume contains a title leaf, dedication, foreword, and twenty-five plates of designs for German estate buildings. In Part IV, there are plans and elevati for a palace, a hospital for disabled soldiers, barracks, and more. Fasch al published materials on mathematics and military science. Anfangsgrunde der Fortification (n.d.) and Kriegs Ingenieur Artillerie und See Lexicon (1735) provided information on artillery, fortifications, and other military tactics Scarce. Some occasional, minor smudging on margins, not affecting the illustrations, else very good. (9726).
