Later tan half calf with gilt titles to spine., marbled boards. Internally clean, slight chip[ping to flyleaf, binding lightly rubbed to extremities, especially joints, spine sunned. Very good. A printing from the same year as the first edition. Gaboriau was a master of French detective fiction, eclipsed in English only by Doyle's 'Sherlock Holmes' stories.

Liechtenstein: QUICK, 1960. [Modern Literature] INSCRIBED FOURTH IMPRESSION. Octavo (23 x 16cm), pp.53. Eleven illustrations including frontispiece by Franz Deak. INSCRIBED by Baron von Falz-Fein, father of Ludmila, in blue ink to dedication page. Publishers green cloth, gilt title upper front board. Photographic yellow dust-jacket, not priced. Ownership inscription to front endpaper, minor marking to front board, Minor tear to upper spine of dust-jacket. Near fine. This story originally appeared in the Christmas 1953 issue of Sketch in London.

A very good copy without wrapper. An anthology of contributions from over 100 various contributors on the overlooked East African Campaign in the Second World War.

Publisher's hardcover in pictorial dust-wrapper showing the original price of $13.95, the other copy in a simple mock-up jacket of some vintage (likely contemporary) with a typographical design. Each book is autographed by John Gardner to the title page with his manuscript note 'Author's Copy'. Both are in near fine condition. The dummy jacket is a somewhat crude Xerox, possibly created by the author to identify a jacketless copy. Contets clean, no inscriptions, some light spotting to some edges, wrappers lightly worn, with the odd chip/rub, spine sunned to final volume. Very good or better. The full collection of secret agent Boysie Oakes novel, written before Gardner's stint as the official James Bond novelist. Many of these had small print runs, some apparently tiny; this hardback first of Traitor's Exit took ten years to locate (even then, lacking the jacket). A particularly difficult set to assemble. From the comprehensive archive assembled by Jon Gilbert (pencil signature within). His encyclopaedic guide to the works of Ian Fleming (2012) won the 16th Breslauer Prize for bibliography. A late Gardner 007, this is now one of the more elusive titles in the series.

From the collection of Ian Fleming bibliographer Otto Penzler, purchased by ourselves at Swann Auctions in 2010, with a pencil note to that effect signed by his bookseller friend and colleague Jon Gilbert. John Gardner's fourth 007 novel as official successor to Ian Fleming; Abandoning his 007 status, James Bond resigns from the service and heads for Monte Carlo, in search of a new role of honour.
