Description:
Pamphlet, 8vo, removed, plain paper wrappers, uncut, 72, [6], 4 tables. Wrappers are chipped at the edges, top wrapper has a three inch tear near spine, and somewhat brittle, partially uncut, some minor soiling and aging; still a very good copy. This is a second edition, a first was published in New York in 1800. Gallatin started out in the state legislature in Pennsylvania, but was elected to the House of Representatives in 1794. He was appointed Secretary of the Treasury in 1801 under Jefferson. While much of the text is directed at reporting on various Federal financial matters, he does give his views on financial responsibility. So things don't seem to change, and in 1790 the amount of U.S. debt outstanding was less than $70 million.

Description:
Pamphlet, 8vo, cardboard wrappers with short title, 19 pp. Some minor soiling and aging, some underlining and pencil marks by a previous owner; otherwise very good. Gardiner (1765-1830) was a clergyman in Boston who was not in favor of a war with Great Britain, and was somewhat anti-French in his politics. This pamphlet questions the logic and value of another war with Britain, and reminds people that the American military wasn't really ready for war. The article also indicates that the Madison Administration was using the issue of impressments to incite the public toward war. Although the author acknowleges that Britain has indeed taken American sailors on the 'high seas', more diplomatic means should be employed to get them back. He asks the question of why the administration wasn't pursuing a war with France, who he argued, was as guilty of this crime as Britain. DNB

Description:
8vo, pamphlet, original wrappers, iv, [160] 76 pp. Rebacked, and with some repairs to cover, including archival tape repairs to spine to fix a two inch tear along the top of spine, minor tears and nicks on spine and edges, covers darkened, some dampstaining and foxing, paper appears to be a little creased or warped; otherwise good. Garrison, who was born in 1805, along with Wendell Phillips and John Greenleaf Whittier were considered the three most influential leaders of the war against slavery. Garrison's strong views opposing slavery got him arrested a couple of times, involved in libel lawsuits and dragged through the streets of Boston on a rope by an angry mob. He was hated by southern slaveholders because of his intensity, and was charged with the intention of driving slaves to insurrection. The state of Georgia offered a $5000 reward for his arrest because of these allegations. Garrison founded the "Genius of Universal Emancipation" and the "Liberator" in 1831, which ran for 30 years. Description:
Pamphlet, 12mo, original printed pale blue wrappers, stapled, 40 pp. Very slight aging; near fine and an exceptional copy. Marcus Garvey (1887-1940) was one of the most influential black leaders of the early 20th century. Unlike other black leaders, Garvey felt for blacks to really gain equality they would be better off going back to Africa. He was a strong champion of black separatism, feeling it was the only way to overcome racism, he even went as far as to propose alliance with white power groups, including the Ku Klux Klan (see An Appeal to the Soul of White America...). He felt the ends of the two groups were actually very similar. In 1914 Garvey founded the Universal Negro Improvement and Conservation Association and African Communities League, typically referred to as the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). This organization would probably have close to 75,000 members and would be dedicated to black advancement and uplift. Garvey was inspired by the ideas of Booker T. Washington,… Read More

Small quarto, original black keratol with title gilt on front cover, illustrated from photographs and drawings, with tipped in frontispiece, [1], 141, [4] pp. Some rubbing to spine and extremities, endpapers a little brittle, front endpaper loose, joints cracked, but still holding, a little soiling within; otherwise very good. Privately printed with only 100 copies published, this is probably the scarcest of the regimental histories. The Tenth Cavalry is the story of the famed "Buffalo Soldiers" regiment consisting of African-American soldiers. They were called the "Buffalo Soldiers" by the Indians because of their dark curly hair. The unit was formed in 1866, and served with much distinction in the 19th and early 20th centuries, fighting Indians in Montana, Texas, and Arizona, pursuing Pancho Villa's men in Mexico, and fending off mosquitoes in Cuba. They served with General Cook in the Indian campaigns, including the surrender of Geronimo in 1876. They also participated in the charge up San Juan Hill… Read More

Description:
8vo, cloth, dust jacket, illustrated, 231 pp. Dust jacket has some chips and tears, mostly around spine and lower portion of the book, slightly bowed, normal aging; otherwise very good. Golding tells the story of an emerging sport that had faded from history after the fall of the Roman Empire. He writes about the "old Time" fighters who helped develop the prize ring in England during the 18th century. He describes in detail some of those early bare knuckle fights including Mendoza vs. Humphreys, George Stevenson vs. Jack Broughton, and the classic battle of Tom Sayers Vs. John Heenan. He also talks about the fights between Tom Cribb and Tom Molyneux. Molyneux a former slave would fight for the championship of England, almost a 100 years before Jack Johnson would become the first black heavyweight champion. While many find bare-knuckle fighting as barbaric, some would argue that the invention of the boxing glove might have done more harm to fighters than bare knuckles.
