A very nice copy in a crisp, bright binding; contents clean but for some scattered light to moderate foxing, largely clean. A typed review slip has been pasted to the front free endpaper causing some light rippling to that leaf. Remarkably uncommon for being issued from a major scholarly press. Gaines served as president of both Wake Forest College and Washington and Lee University. This present book was his first published work and served as his dissertation at Columbia. Howes G-8. Last leaf with two mended closed tears to the inner margin, one extending into the text (no loss); vertical fold through the first several leaves. Still, a reasonably nice, clean copy. This edition was preceded by a Washington imprint of the same year under the title "Letters . . . on the Oregon Question." Howes calls this present New York edition, the "best edition." Both England and the U.S. laid claim to the Oregon territory. Gallatin reviews the history and the nature of the claims, hoping to influence popular opinion and convince the negotiators of the merits of the U.S. position. Eberstadt writes, "[Gallatin] and Richard Rush represented the U.S. in the negotiation of 1818 with Great Britain on the Question of title to the Northwest Coast and of the boundary west of Lake of the Woods. . . . A remarkably nice copy that is bright and clean but for one page with some light green pencil but thorough annotation; price intact on the front flap. An early work by this award winning writer and Poet Laureate of Virginia.

Light to moderate foxing, largely to the margins of the leaves. Generally a very nice copy of the first state with the mis-spelling in the imprint. Ebenezer Gay was pastor in Hingham from 1718-1787. While the first decades of his pastorate were fairly calm, Robert Wilson writes in his biographical sketch in the Oxford American National Biography, "New England's Great Awakening (1740-1742) propelled Gay out of his relatively peaceful Hingham ministry into the thick of ecclesiastical and theological controversy. Although he controlled and even profited from the religious revival in Hingham, he was appalled by the social disruption that the Awakening engendered. An interesting collection of early Virginia laws including laws relating to enslaved persons; various individuals allowed to build roads and bridges, some with tolls; matters relating to soldiers; and more.

The American Antiquarian Society catalog record for this work give the pagination as "26, [2] p." and says "Text stops in midsentence on p. [27]." That missing page is supplied in a faintly printed facsimile, but legible. Sergeant is alleged to have solicited $2000 a year from applicants for the post of clerk, the money to be paid to a relative; and, in other ways here enumerated, to have misused his office to the detriment of the government, all while serving as Secretary of the Commonwealth. Resolutions out of the House of Representatives of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts with regard to the Alabama Claims on the part of the United States government. The claims center around the British Government having secretly sold the Confederate States, the CSS Alabama and the U. S. request for damages. Contains also a copy of the treaty between the U. S. and Britain with regards to the water boundary between U. S. and British possessions in North America. Uncommon. Only one copy located in OCLC.

No printing information, but Evan tentatively hypothesizes Philadelphia. Concerns service in Georgia during the period 1790-1794 in the wars with the Creek and Cherokee Indians. An excellent facsimile of the greatest book issued from the Golden Cockeral Press and what Roderick Cave calls, "arguably the finest of all private press books printed between the wars (The Private Presses, p. 170).
