xiv+319 pages with tables, bibliography and index. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6") bound in original publisher's black cloth with silver lettering to spine and cover in original jacket. First edition. Before the Pinochet coup in 1973, Chile had a lengthy history of constitutionalism. Early in the republican era the aristocracy established order in the political system; a century later the emergent middle sectors infused politics with wider democratic practices and, relative to most of Latin America, a level of pluralism came to characterize group politics. Despite the distinctive advantages that embellished Chile's political system, however, certain unfulfilled promises still marred the actual picture in the early 1960s. As the lower economic strata of society were continually passed over by most of the social reforms and economic advances that bettered the general outlook of the nation, their frustrations were brought out into the open and their votes were appealed to by reformist and radical political… Read More

Description:
281 pages. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 3/4") bound in original publisher's quarter black cloth with blue gilt lettering to spine over blue boards in original pictorial jacket. First edition.
Alejandro ``Alley'' Munoz, a handicapped man who worked as a gofer at an L.A. banking firm, was often mocked by the firm's self-absorbed young execs; after Alley is murdered, his loyal defender, investment banker Iris Thorne, opens an envelope he'd recently given her. The key inside opens a safe-deposit box containing $200,000 and valuable stock certificates. Shortly thereafter, Iris overhears some shifty co-workers refer to a thwarted stock-market scam. Refusing to believe Alley was an embezzler, Iris hides her findings from the LAPD, even though the investigating detective turns out to be a former college beau. Brash and tough, with an MBA from UCLA, Iris is also depicted as a shopaholic with weaknesses for expensive trinkets, casual sex and makeup, characterizations that make her hard to take seriously even when she's… Read More

Description:
263-271 pages with bibliography. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Ethnology Volume VI, Number 3 complete issue. First edition. The most important process in tribal council humor is communication. Hammond's statement that "joking provides a permissive and flexible context in which a grievance can be expressed" is a true but limited and inadequate proposition. Jokes can communicate many kinds of things. They can indicate the relationship of a visiting official with the council. They can suggest many different shades of opinion about suggestions and proposals. Through humor, men can sometimes communicate what would be difficult to say in any other way. Through humor, human contact, always problematic, becomes less fragile. Condition: Edge wear, conres bumped else very good.

Description:
89-98 pages with map, photographs and bibliography. Royal octavo (9 1/4"x 6") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Journal of Anthropological Research Volume 33, Number 1. First edition. In the patla, or barter section of the periodic market at San Juan Ajalpan, in the Tehuacan Valley of Mexico, farmers exchange valley-gown maize and vegetables for fruits and other hill products. Although negotiated barter is common, most exchanges are of fixed quantities of dry shelled maize for hill fruits of relatively uniform size. Since both parties to a transaction know current exchange rates in terms shelled maie, trading proceeds rapidly, with little discussion. Prices for hill products in maize and money are necessarily equal. However, social circumscription and limited volume probably discourage arbitrage. Condition: Spine sunned, corners gently bumped, light edge wear else very good.

451-476 pages with maps, chart, tables and cited references. Quarto (11" x 8 1/4") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Current Anthropology Volume 39, Volume 4 complete issue. First edition. Archaeologists working in Mesoamerica have long recognized the importance and antiquity of marketplaces and market exchange in the organization and integration of pre‐Hispanic society. Most approaches currently employed have, however, had difficulty in identifying pre‐Hispanic marketplaces using material remains. This study introduces a new way to identify marketplace exchange based on the composition of domestic assemblages and how they are affected by market‐based provisioning strategies. It identifies three distinguishing features of marketplace exchange: that households provision themselves independently of one another, that exchanges are concentrated in a centralized locale, and that economic interaction takes place without regard to social rank. The distribution of imported ceramics and locally… Read More

Description:
372-391 pages with figures. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6") loose pages from Man, Volume 14, number 3. First edition. This article uses Piagetian genetic epistemology to characterize the intelligence of later Achulean hominids. In particular the Piagetin concepts of reversibility and conservation are used to assess the spatial concepts used by the hominids who manufactured the artifacts from the Isimila Prehistoric Site, Tanzania. It is concluded that these artifacts required the organisational abilities of operational intelligence and that, therefore, the hominid knappers were not significantly less intelligent than modern adults. Such a conclusion indicates that increasing intelligence has not been a significant factor in cultural evolution for at least the last 300,000 years. Concluding that later Acheulean hominids employed operational thought also suggests that such cultural realms as kinship and cosmogony may have been more complex than archaeologists have therefore imagined. 2 parts in one volume of four parts: 246 pages; 240 pages. Duodecimo (6 1/2" x 4") bound in leather with raised spine bands, brown spine label in gilt letter with gilt edges. (Sabin: 26303; Palau 96484) First French edition.Thomas Gage was born in England and died in Jamaica. His work, which recounts his life and travels as a Dominican friar in Mexico and Guatemala between 1625 and 1637, was first published in London in 1648, when the Puritan cause was victorious in England. This book is decidedly influenced by political and religious considerations and carries the deep impress of Gage's character, which in his later years was not a pleasant one. Gage wrote an eye-witness account of life and every-day events in the New World which made livelier reading than the impersonal narrative of the historian. In various descriptive passages Gage brings to life events of three centuries ago with marked resplendence.Condition:Back-strip ends worn with traces of sticker, rehinged, early owner's signature on title.… Read More

He closely observes colonial society and culture. On his return to England in 1637 he converted to Anglicanism. The route led through Mexico, where Gage decided to remain and for a time taught Latin in the convent school. Description:
348 pages including index. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6 1/4") bound in original publishes pictorial wrappers. First edition limited to 1000 copies. It can be argued that the Third Mexican Provincial Council of 1585 was one of the most important religious events in the history of Mexico. Summoned by Pedro Moya de Contreras, the all-powerful archbishop, visitador, and later viceroy, it was one of many such councils held in Spain and its dominions in the aftermath of the Council of Trent. It not only enacted a comprehensive code of canon law for New Spain but also commissioned important works such as a uniform catechism and ceremonial. One of the most important of these was the directory for confessors, a lengthy summary of moral theology, canon law, and pastoral practice designed to compensate for the poor education of the clergy. It is an invaluable source for the social, economic, and religious life of sixteenth-century New Spain. Condition: Slight bumps on front edge and top of spine, else very good to fine.
