Description:
Lignano Sabbiadoro, Italy: Lignano per la Cultura. Near Fine. 2006. First Edition. Softcover. [very slight bump to bottom right corner, otherwise nice and clean, virtually as new]. (B&W photographs) A retrospective look at the on-location production of A FAREWELL TO ARMS, the 1957 David O. Selznick production that was the second film adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's novel. The text is entirely in Italian, so I'm somewhat guessing at the content, but the book appears to be a kind of companion piece to a TV documentary produced by La Cineteca del Friuli, in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the film's production. It's divided into two main sections: the first, written by Carlo Gaberscek, is entitled "Hemingway e il Friuli," and appears to be a history of the conception and writing of the novel and its subsequent transmutation into the film, with quite a bit of attention paid to Hemingway himself and his personal connection to the Friuli region of Italy;… Read More

Garden City NY: Doubleday & Company, Inc.. Very Good+ in Very Good dj. 1954. First Edition. Hardcover. [light shelfwear, tiny stain on bottom edge of text block, one-time owner's name printed at top of front endpaper (see notes); the jacket is edgeworn and lightly soiled, with a couple of small internal tape-repairs, heavy wrinkling/creasing to lower one inch of the spine panel]. A "deliciously candid [or, if you prefer, 'gay and impudent'] memoir" by the youngest of the Gabor sisters, published fairly early in her career (she was just 35), and especially so considering that her greatest fame, as co-star of the great TV sitcom "Green Acres," was more than a decade in the future. Two notes: (1) the previous owner's name, printed in a rather awkward hand at the top of the front endpaper, was "Dave Koch"; could this possibly have been the David Koch who went on to become one of America's richest men and a major funder of right-wing… Read More

New York/Cleveland: The World Publishing Company. Very Good in Very Good- dj. 1970. First Edition. Hardcover. [solid copy, a bit of wear to covers at top and bottom edges, light offsetting to endpapers, light soiling to top page edges; jacket lightly soiled and spotted both internally and externally, and a previous owner saw fit to "reinforce" it with scotch tape along the top and bottom edges]. (B&W photographs) INSCRIBED ("To John") and SIGNED by the author on the ffep. Gabriel, the All-Pro quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams -- (an interlude, while you try to remember when the Rams played in L.A., or when any pro football team played in L.A., for that matter) -- "opens his diary and invites you to see the inner workings for a top man on a top team hot on a winning streak that looks as though it will go on forever." Yeah, well, it didn't: the book chronicles the Rams' 1969 season, which was humming along just fine until they lost the last three… Read More

Oakland CA: University of California Press. Near Fine in Fine dj. (c.2022). First Edition. Hardcover. [book is nice and clean, with minimal handling wear from a single reading; the jacket is flawless]. (B&W photographs) The first major book on Davies since the Fred Lawrence Guiles biography (1972) and her own posthumous and somewhat spurious memoir, "The Times We Had: Life with William Randolph Hearst" (1975), this biography aims to rehabilitate the stereotypical image of the actress as a marginally-talented rich man's mistress, whose legacy had been further tainted by the unfair association of her with the "Susan Alexander Kane" character in Orson Welles's CITIZEN KANE. Based on "meticulous research, unprecedented access to archives around the world, and interviews with acquaintances and family members," the book's goal is to give Davies's life a strongly feminist spin, while "pull[ing] back layers of myth to show a complex and… Read More

Winter Park FL: Abnormal Fun Comics. Near Fine. 2002. First Edition. Softcover. [extremely slight bumping to lower corners, otherwise as new]. (B&W photographs & graphics) "Hailed by critics as the greatest photo-comic ever created," this is a collection of the first six issues in a single volume, which offers the reader "the latest in low-tech 1950's style special effects" in telling its tale of a group of mutants/aliens/whatever they are, "trained and ready to do battle with the interdimensional warlords, mutant brain-boys, and evil corporations that threaten our universe." One of the cover blurbs describes it as "a daring comic-book parody experiment unlike anything I've read before." .

Austin: University of Texas Press. Fine in Near Fine dj. 2013. First Edition. Hardcover. [a very nice copy, no discernible wear to book; just the teensiest trace of soiling to the rear panel of the dust jacket]. (B&W photographs, facsimiles) In this study, the author "investigates Soderbergh's work on such films as THE LIMEY, ERIC BROCKOVICH, OCEAN'S ELEVEN and its sequels, SOLARIS, THE GOOD GERMAN, CHE, and THE INFORMANT!, as well as on the K STREET television series. Dispensing with classical auteurist models, he positions Soderbergh and authorship in terms of collaborative production, location filming activity, dealmaking and distribution, textual representation, genre and adaptation work, critical reception, and other industrial and cultural phenomena. [He] also addresses Soderbergh's role as standard-bearer for U.S. independent cinema following 1989's SEX, LIES AND VIDEOTAPE, as well as his cinephilic dialogues with different forms of U.S. and international… Read More

Baltimore: Reid, Alton and Company, Inc.. Very Good+ in Very Good dj. (c.1962). First Edition. Hardcover. [good solid copy, very light soiling to page edges, minor wear at corners; jacket moderately worn at corners/edges, a bit of soiling, minor chipping at spine ends]. This novel -- the author's "latest novel" and her "first in more than a decade," per the jacket copy (although a LoC search turns up only this one title under her name) -- "takes the reader behind the scenes of social, political and diplomatic Washington. With her singular urbanity and lightness of touch, [the author] delightfully reveals the hidden machinations that led to the twenty-four hour period -- midnight to midnight -- when all involved find the course of their lives changes." The jacket copy proceeds to describe enough stock characters to populate a small city -- Peyton Place, for example -- among them such cliches as: "Washington's most publicized hostess"… Read More

[minimal shelfwear, slight discoloration to gutters; the jacket is modestly edgeworn and lightly scuffed, with a 1.5-inch closed tear at the top right corner of the front panel, teensy bits of paper loss at the spine ends]. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper: "To Rosemary King -- / with all good wishes / Paul Gallico." Gallico's "simple, short written parable on the regenerative power of friendship and love, set against a backdrop of the horror of war" (Wikipedia), is about the titular bird, wounded by a gunshot, who is nursed back to health by a disabled artist and a young local Essex girl, and culminates in the artist's heroic act of self-sacrifice during the evacuation of the British Army from Dunkirk. Locarno/London: with the British Film Institute / Éditions Yellow Now. Fine. 1994. First Edition. Softcover. [very nice tight copy, essentially as new]. Trade PB (B&W photographs, drawings) The first major work on the life and career of this somewhat under-appreciated (except in France) film director, a former cartoonist, animator and comedy gag man who moved into live-action features in the late 1940s, becoming "a major transitional figure, the link between the screwball comedies of Hawks and Sturges, and the modern comedy film." Prepared in conjunction with a retrospective of Tashlin's work presented at the 1994 Locarno Film Festival, the book contains critical essays, an interview, excerpts from his published and unpublished works, extensive notes on all his feature films, and an equally extensive "Documentation" section that presents a chronology of his life, detailed credits of his work in animation, an account of his work as a gag man and comedy… Read More

A sharp-looking copy of the first "D.A. Doug Selby" mystery, a series to which Gardner turned for the occasional break from cranking out Perry Mason books (at least until 1949, when the last of the nine Selby books appeared). The jacket design on this early G&D reprint is identical to that of the William Morrow first edition. Much less common (and considerably more durable) than the cheaply-produced Triangle Books edition from the 1940s. .

"A desperate manhunt pits a Navajo cop against a military murderer," the Navajo cop in question being one Sam Watchman, "a man of our time [who] must measure himself and decide whether to disclaim his own heritage or affirm it." New York/London: D. Appleton-Century Company. Very Good. 1934. First Edition. Hardcover. (pictorial cloth; no dust jacket) [solid copy, faint spotting on covers, very slight bumping/fraying at several corners, uneven dust-soiling to top edge, rear fep torn out]. Set mostly during the 1920s, this novel tells the story of the three Shaw brothers, who live across the street from the amusement park where their father was killed (during construction of its dance pavilion), and find themselves inexorably drawn into its "garish, gaudy life." Their neurotic mother, meanwhile, believes the park to be "a dread monster which will take away her sons as it has her husband." (Quotes are from the dust jacket, not present on this copy of the book.) The author, whose first novel this was, was the son of "Uncle Wiggly" creator Howard R. Garis. .
