Description:
New-York: Anderson, Davis and Co, 1828. FIRST EDITION. 182 x 112 mm. (7 1/8 x 4 1/2"). xii, [13]-206 pp. Publisher's gray boards, backed with black roan, flat spine divided into panels by double gilt rules, gilt lettering. With an engraved plate depicting the recommended pruning and training of a grape vine. Front flyleaf with pencilled signature of Addie Gratacap and blue crayon signature of John Fields. Occasional neatly pencilled underlinings or marginalia in a 19th century hand. ◆Joints rubbed and cracked (rear board with the tiniest bit of give), spine with general wear (including small losses at top and bottom), boards somewhat soiled, text with persistent foxing (as usual in American imprints of this period); with obvious defects, but what one would expect for an American book on this subject at this date. This practical guide to gardening in the United States was written in part as a rebuff to English agricultural writer William Cobbett, who had cast aspersions on the type and quality of… Read More

Description:
Facsimiles of the manuscripts for "Narcissus" edited and with an essay by David R. Smith. Distinctive marbled paper boards, enclosed in the original textured heavy inner folder and matching slipcase, paper labels on volume and case. Frontispiece portrait by Leonard Baskin. Printed in red and black, with very wide margins, on elegant Fabriano paper. ◆In mint condition and IN THE ORIGINAL CARDBOARD PACKING CONTAINER.This finely produced book examines the history and significance of Conrad's famous preface, which may be the best-known critical statement in English concerning modern fiction. About writing "The Nigger of Narcissus" and its preface, Conrad said, "After writing the last words of that book, . . . I understood that I had done with the sea, and that henceforth I had to be a writer. And almost without laying down the pen I wrote a preface, trying to express the spirit in which I was entering on the task of my new life." Both an emotional testimonial and a critical analysis, the preface "was… Read More

Although lacking the final leaf of text, this volume is of considerable interest as an expertly made and decorated so-called "Peasant Binding," a colorful binding style that began in Hungary and spread through Germany, the… Read More

WITH 12 ENGRAVINGS BY STEPHEN GOODEN (nine of these full-page), with original tissue guards. ◆Vellum with a little natural yellowing and a couple of small nicks and other imperfections, but the contents pristine. This is a beautiful, limited edition of Irish novelist George Moore's controversial retelling of the life of Jesus Christ, illustrated by Stephen Gooden. First published in 1916, the novel was nearly banned for blasphemy, and encouraged Moore (1852-1933) to publish his future works in limited editions. The copper engravings of Gooden (1892-1955) are among the most beautiful book illustrations of his day. Horne says that he was a "literary" artist who was sensitive to the form of the book, aware of the possibilities of… Read More

Description:
[London, ca. 1888]. Sizes vary slightly depending on the work, the largest dimensions being 560 x 385 mm. (22 x 15 1/8"). Most plates accompanied by a letterpress leaf describing the species being depicted. ◆A few leaves with slight creasing to a corner or a touch of light foxing, otherwise FINE SPECIMENS, the coloring bright and the paper very clean. These hand-colored lithographs come from two of Gould's most sought-after works and display the characteristic detail, quality, and accuracy that are synonymous with the so-called "English Audubon." Each of these plates captures the individuality and personality of the species depicted, often placing a bird within its natural environments and pairing it with different types of flora. As noted by the DNB, "the design and natural arrangement of the birds on the plates was due to the genius of John Gould, and a Gould plate has a distinctive beauty and quality." Although he did not produce the actual lithographs himself, Gould did create preliminary… Read More
