Image size: 17 3/16 x 14 1/16 inches. A charming Rococo print by the Parisian engraver Robert Gaillard, after the celebrated genre painter Charles Eisen. Charles Eisen (1720-1778) was renowned for his charming genre paintings, which were immensely popular with an art market eager for romantic images. Eisen's charm and grace, as well as his considerable talent, brought him to the attention of the King's mistress, Madame du Pompadour. Through her influence Eisen soon became a popular Court painter and a professor at the Acadèmie de Saint-Luc. At the beginning of the Indian removal era, Albert Gallatin convinced the U.S. government to fund an investigation into the languages of the Native Americans being displaced. His motivation for systematizing Native languages stemmed largely from a long fascination with phililogy, encouragement by Humboldt, and correspondence with DuPonceau and others on the subject; from the government's perspective, bringing "civilization" to Native tribes first required proof of their intelligence. Working through the War Department, Gallatin secured $2000 in funding for the project and promptly had Secretary of War James Barbour issue a circular to Indian agents. Dated May 15, 1826, the circular begins: "It is the intention of the government to collect and preserve such information as may be obtained concerning the Indian languages." The Gamy-Montaut prints document various historical events in the early history of motorized transportation, including Power Boat Racing, Motorcycle and Motor Car Racing, Motor Car Touring, Zeppelins and Airplanes. Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries. Marguerite Montaut, Ernest's wife, joined him in his work producing not only racing prints but also developing a fine series of aviation prints commemorating such events as the first flights on the early European mail routes. Paris: [Mabileau & Co.], 1903. Hand-coloured pochoir print. Very good condition. The pass for the lead made by Gabriel over the very recognizable "Shovel-nose". Mors, the driver behind Gabriel, had limited success in these races, this 70 horse power chain-driven car being the exception. There is some confusion as to the actual number on the car during this race, with some records indicating #6 rather than #168 as shown. This was Fernand Gabriel's only win in a career that lasted until 1923. He was killed during an RAF air raid on Paris in 1943. The 1903 Paris-Madrid race is infamous in racing history. The cars were extremely well-powered for the time, though not as well-endowed with breaking power. The speculators crowded the route for the race, and casualties resulted. Other oddities included one car whose transmission became stuck in reverse and was driven that way for 25 miles. Contemporary limp vellum A fine unsophisticated copy of El Inca's history of Peru: a fundamental history of early America, here in its second issue differing from the first only in its variant title-page. The second issue of the second part of Garcailaso de la Vega's famous Historia General or 'Royal Commentaries' which had been published first, a few months earlier in Cordova, in 1616. This issue includes the same text block as the first, with only a variant title page with a different and larger vignette of the Virgin, and the words 'y à su costa' added to the imprint. Fort Laramie was the negotiating site and namesake of two of the most notorious US broken treaties with Native Americans, in 1851 and 1868. In 1868, Gardner was commissioned by the US Government to photograph the peace talks between the federally-appointed Indian Peace Commission, which included General Sherman, and chiefs of the Plains Indians tribes at Fort Laramie in Wyoming. Paris: au Jardin Baujon, & chez Ch. Bance, 1818. Hand-coloured copper-engraved plate by Lerouge after Garneray. In fine condition apart from some expert repairs to tears to blank margins. A snap-shot view of the visit of King Louis XVIII to the Baujon pleasure gardens and the 'Aerial Walk-ways' in particular. This precursor of the modern roller-coaster was opened in Paris in 1817. As the view shows, it had two separate but continuous tracks. The tracks led out from the central tower with the walk-ways and tracks running in parallel. Particpiants could either walk down along the walk-ways or travel along the the track in the specially constructed 'cars' which were locked onto the track and reached speeds of up to 40 mph. The central tower could be reached by going up the central incline along one of the parallel tracks in one of the 'cars'.

A very rare and highly detailed sea chart, the most important map of South Carolina's Port Royal Sound and Hilton Head made in the early days of the Revolutionary War, in the first state. This very finely engraved and immensely detailed chart was superior to all other maps printed of the region, and the most important portrayal of the Port Royal Sound available in the early days of the Revolutionary War. The map embraces today's Beaufort County, with the Sound's excellent natural harbour, formed by the numerous Sea Islands, which are separated from each other by an elaborate web of tidal channels. The Broad River enters from the north, and the sound is bordered by Port Royal, Parris, and Trench's (Hilton Head) Island, and Lady's and Saint Helena Islands. 1792. Engraving, coloured by hand, by Tardieu, after Gatteaux. Gatteaux was a sculptor and medallist; among his accomplishments was the invention of a machine for duplicating sculpture. He also designed and engraved paper money, lottery tickets, tax stamps and other official and legal paper, of the sort represented here, which may be examples of his work. Included are paper currency of various issues during the early years of the Republic, centered on an amusing engraving of a beggar, a symbolic warning to those who would put their trust in such ephemeral guarantors of wealth. The trompe l'oeil theme, generally a casual arrangement of printed paper, letters, playing cards, drawings and watercolors (frequently against a specific background, with the whole occupying a very shallow pictorial space), enjoyed an enduring popularity in Europe as a sub-genre of still-life. Expertly restored, backed with modern linen, trimmed in maroon cloth, on contemporary rollers. colour bright and clean. Very good. A lovely wall map of Saratoga County, the most famous spa in mid-nineteenth century America. Each township is separately coloured, and individual property owners are located and named throughout the county. There are inset maps of several county towns and villages, including a large detailed street plan of Saratoga Springs, plus Glenn Falls, Ballston Spa, Jessup's Landing, Waterford, and Schuylerville. The map is surrounded by fine engravings of illustrious local buildings. Geil, a noted upstate surveyor, published maps of several New York counties between 1852 and 1856.
