Book is indistinguishable from new, no bumps no writing. DJ is very good plus with quarter-1 inch split at top foldover. Shadow is from scanner, not the book. Gilbert throws light on the anachronism of the U.S. decision to help the French keep control of their S.E. Asia colony, discussion (1954) of dropping atomic bombs on Vietminh positions. The logic of Britain attacking Egypt and the Canal Crisis of 1956 in which Britain and France (Eden and Moller) connived with Israel and the UK opposition party (Gaitskill) denouncing military attack. The Soviets (Kruschev) taking the opportunity to move into Hungary. And so it goes on with revelations of the secret political manoeuvring of the western nations. As always, his writing s superb.

Book is GOOD plus in strict observance of grades without regard for age but this is over a century old and at least VERY GOOD for its age. Brown boards with black titling. Tissue-protected frontis. Title page as on scan. 12 photos on 8 plates, as published, and all fine condition. QUOTE. When Woodsmen of the West first appeared in 1908, most readers could not relate to its rendering of the rough edges of logging-camp life.QUOTE. . The accuracy of its detail makes it one of the finest examples of local realism in Canadian writing. It is also a fascinating chronicle of conflicting personalities, and of the genius of British Columbia hand-loggers, the culture of camp life, and the intrigues and corruption of the lumber business at the turn of the century. UNQUOTE An excessively rare book. I can find no trace of a first edition like this is any library in the world although there ebooks and PODs.

Book opens and looks and  feels as though it has never been read. Bright and new BUT inside front board is a small manuscript owner name. The author was a principal of the high school in Rapid City, Manitobe and writes of the western prairie of the late 19th and early twentieth centuries. Foreword by Arthur L. Phelps (1887-1970), professor of English at Wesley--and later United—College. The book "like new with toning." The dust jacket has tiny edge nicks and a three-inch split at the fold-over, not visible from the scan because there is no loss of paper. . Having a dust jacket is unusual. All eight illustrations are present and perfect THIS IS A FIRST EDITION OF OUTSTANDING QUALITY
