A compact, easy-to-handle volume that tells you all you need to know about mixing and stirring. Glasses and equipment illustrated in black and white plus a small section on canapés and hors d'oeuvre to go along with the drinks. Gaige had a reputation as a bon vivant and was widely respected as a gourmet and wine connoisseur. Owner's inscription on front free end paper. Some cocktail stains on two pages. Delaware, Ohio, 1929-1930 & 1937-1939. This particular set of journals, was, at first glance, an archetypal account of small town living in the midwest. The overlooked aspect of the detail accounts that Rose shares is the considerable amount of social connection that was present at the time. There is not a day that goes by that Rose is not visited or goes visiting, either by a friend or family member or both. For instance, the first two entries note: January 1st, 1929: Spent the day at Ellis (son). Rained a little, cloudy. 2nd: Charley (husband) & I went to Mrs. Bucks Funeral in the afternoon. A superb illustration by Charles Dana Gibson of Mr. Samuel Pickwick delivering his oration to the assembled Pickwick Club. Gibson (18657-1944) was an illustrious artist and illustrator at the turn of the 19th century. He defined the look of fashionable women in his era by the illustrations he drew for Life, Collier's, Scribner's and other magazines. During. WWI, he led the group of illustrators doing war posters for the US Government. Among his portfolios is one with six illustrations of characters from Charles Dicken's Works. In 1820 Maine seceded from Massachusetts and became a state. A thriving town in the early 1800's, with industries including logging, trading, publishing, and shipbuilding. Later, the area would employ over a thousand people in the ice industry; frozen blocks loaded onto Hallowell's schooners traveled as far as Cuba. Disbound and toned, but in fairly good shape.
