Description:
[New York], Brentano's [but 'manufactured in Great Britan'], 1928. Original black cloth-backed orange boards, spine lettered in orange, colour-lithographic dust-wrapper designed by F D; pp. 319; a superb copy. Judith Gautier, daughter of the romantic 'orientalist' Théofile, was an oriental scholar focusing on China and Japan. This work, originally published in 1869 is a novel of ancient China recreating life and civilisation of Imperial China. Judith Gautier is often described as Wagners "muse" during Parsifal - as Mathilde Wesendonk is supposed to have been his muse during the creation of Tristan - it is certain that Judith Gautier and Wagner were close. Allegedly Wagner named his chaise-longue after her.

Paris, Eymery and Delaunay, 1818. 8vo. Contemporary calf-backed drab boards, spine with raised bands, ornamented and lettered in gilt; pp. 487; hinges at tail of spine repaired; extremities with wear, but stable; internally, apart from occasional light browning, good. Scarce first edition of this travelogue covering the journey of a group of Knights Hospitallers from the south western corner of Germany to Saint Petersburg in order to bestow upon the Tsar a high decoration of the Maltese order. After Napoleon had taken over Malta in 1798, many Knights had found shelter in Russia. The Jesuit-educated Abbé Georgel had been French Ambassador to Vienna in 1774, and as a 70-year old former mover and shaker of the ancien régime he undertook an impressive overland journey through a good chunk of Europe, thereby recording the political, mitilitary and economic state of the Continent from May 1799 to the end of 1800, with a four-month sojourn at the Russian court. The entire narrative is full of reflections… Read more

1621. Padua: Martini Stampator Camerale/ Guasparri Crivellari. 1621/1623. Small oblong quarto. Twentieth century wood-patterned boards; pp. 18, 28 plates illustrating methods of carving meat with manuscript additions, missing folding plate of carving utensils; pp. 47, missing all 3 plates; very good. First editions. Significant because it contains the first printings of two parts of what became Giegher's Tre Trattati (1629). The third part, on napkin folding, was never printed individually. Il Trinciato deals with the art of carving meat, while Lo Scalco (The Steward) concerns service; the three parts together became one of the most important guides to the serving of meals in the best houses, and the carving illustrations are both fascinating and appealing. Mattia Giegher (c.1589 - c. 1639, born Matthias Jager in Moosburg, Bavaria) moved to Italy in around 1616 and was so famed for his mastery of the arts of hospitality that he lectured on the subject at the University of Padua. 1937. [Queen's Theatre]. 1937. Mounted together, 301 x 470 mm in mount. Black and white portrait postcard of John Gielgud as Mr Mason in the play He Was Born Gay, inscribed by Gielgud "John Gielgud. Mr Mason. He was Born Gay. June 1937." [With] A typed letter, dated May 27, 1937, signed by John Gielgud on his headed paper to a Miss Bannerman thanking her for a letter, "I was very pleased to hear that you had seats for the evening and hope that you enjoyed the play last night". With a manuscript postcript in ink "Thank you too for the charming present last night. The play went very well but we have a big bird in some of the press - so cannot tell what will happen." An interesting combination of items about one of Gielgud's theatrical flops. He Was Born Gay was written by Emlyn Williams, one of Gielgud's early homosexual lovers. The play, directed by Gielgud himself, was not a success. In a later 1948 letter to Terence Rattigan he wrote "I think the fiasco… Read more
