Description:
London: Printed at C. Hullmandel's Lithographic Establishment 1828, 1828. First edition, one of 150 copies. Large 4to 288x225mm. pp. [10], 147, [1 errata], 4pp adverts. 55 lithographed plates. Original green cloth, red morocco label to spine, lettered in gilt. Corners worn, spine somewhat faded and with tears to head and foot. Stain on lower cover. Internally very good with some slight spotting and foxing in places. The plates are in particularly good condition. The text provides a selective study of various aspects of architecture - "Defensive architecture", "Architecture of the Middle Ages" and "Domestic Architecture of England". The plates, however, are all taken from the great Italian landscape painters (Claude and Poussin are treated as honorary Italians for these purposes) and show how buildings should be placed in the landscape in order to achieve the correct "picturesque" effect. The lithographs are the work of Charles Hullmandel who came to England as a child when his father, a German… Read More

London: Printed by Ja. Cottrel for Giles Calverts 1658, 1658. First edition. Folio in 4s. pp. [18], 276; [2], 1-38 [4], 41, [2], 42-294, [10]. Lacking final blank leaf. Frontispiece portrait of Gadbury. Nineteenth century, half vellum, marbled paper covered boards. Some scuffing and rubbing to boards, label missing from spine, corners worn. Internally very good but with some browning, heavy in a few places. Overall a very good copy of one of the most important works of seventeenth century astrology. John Gadbury (1627-1704) was quite a character. In the 1640s and 50s, he was an enthusiastic religious radical joining the Levellers and Abiezer Coppe's "Family of Love". In 1652, he began to study astrology and from 1655 published annual almanacs. As well as judicial astrology, Gadbury's other interests extended to physics, astronomy, navigation and exploration. By the late 1650s, Gadbury's political and religious affiliations were shifting and by the time of the Restoration in… Read More

Description:
London: J.M.Dent and Sons Ltd. [1938], 1938. First edition. 4to. 195x133mm. pp. [x], 48. Frontispiece portrait of Hölderlin. Original grey cloth. Dustjacket with tear to foot of spine, about half an inch missing. Other closed tears repaired. Marking and staining to upper cover of dust jacket. Contents in very good condition. Ownership signature of Kathleen Raine on front free endpaper - it is signed "Kathleen" but checking against other examples of her handwriting, it is clearly Raine's. She was a close friend of Gascoyne (initially through the poet Charles Madge who married Raine in 1938, the year of the publication of this collection). Hölderlin's Madness contains an introductory essay followed by 24 poems. These are loose translations of work by Holderlin but rendered into Gascoyne deceptively simple forms.

Description:
London: John Murray 1823, 1823. Reprint of the 1822 edition edited by Crabbe himself. A very nice set in contemporary straight-grained red morocco. Front and rear boards with fine gilt dentelles. Inside dentelles. Spines with four raised bands with gilt lettering and decoration. One area of marking on vol. vi. Text is in excellent condition and overall this is a lovely set. Fine Vol. I. Poems; Vol. II and III. The Borough; Vols. IV and V. Tales; Vols VI-VIII. Tales of the Hall. One does not meet much Crabbe today, save for his poem 'The Borough' with its tale of Peter Grimes, which inspired a 29-year-old Benjamin Britten to return to England, and Suffolk (where Crabbe, too, was born and raised). Such an occasional, vicarious encounter does little justice to the fame Crabbe enjoyed in his lifetime. A friend of Burke, and later Scott (who called him the 'English Juvenal' in Waverley), Crabbe was a poet whose realism, 'preceding even Cowper and anticipating Wordsworth, was the… Read More

At the corners of the outer border are the Beckford and Hamilton crests, this book having been in the collection of William Beckford who used two crests, a heron's head with a fish in its beak (the Beckford crest) and an oak tree with a saw which was the Hamilton crest, his younger daughter having married the Duke of Hamilton. Japan Self Published 1981, 1981. First edition, limited to 500 copies. Unpaginated. 47 colour plates. Black cloth with title and author stamped in English in silver on upper board and in Japanese on the spine. White card slip-case with a photograph on its front and the title and author printed in black in English and Japanese. Slip-case is protected by a plastic wrapper. Both book and case are in fine condition. The photographs in this, the last of Gocho's three published works were taken between April 1978 and October 1980. As with his other work, there is a sense of Gocho's detachment from the world around him, born in part perhaps from his own difficult circumstances. He was born in 1946 with a rare degenerative illness which prevented him from growing to full adult height; he was only four feet tall. Furthermore Gocho knew from an early age that he would not live beyond middle age; he died in 1983. "Shigeo Gocho's final series, Familiar Street Scenes, marks a significant departure from the… Read More

London: Privately published 1959, 1959. One of five copies privately published "for the pleasure of Felix, Jean, Michael, Felicia, Stéphane". 187x125mm. pp. 71 [1bl] with five blank leaves at the beginning and end. Bound by Henri Mercher in 1960, signed to foot of front pastedown. Boards are made of gold inlayed Plexiglas, the gold spelling out "Jean". Black morocco spine lettered in gilt. With the original slipcase. A striking binding in immaculate condition and an excellent example of Mercher's innovative design and technique in which he used unorthodox materials. Henri Mercher (1912-1976) trained with Robert Bonfils at the École Estienne. Mercher said that he was one of the worst students but on the evidence of this stylish, minimalist work this seems unlikely. Presumably Stephane Golmann had the other four copies of this work bound in a similar fashion but we have found no record of them. Golmann was a fascinating figure: a singer songwriter in the French chanson tradition (the works in this… Read More

Description:
2012, 2012. Signed acrylic painting on paper of a silhouette figure of a naked man (290x225mm) in a white mount and framed in black (438x342 in the frame). The image is a simple one but typical of Gormley's exploration of and interest in the basic outline form of the human figure. It is painted in black with a lowering sky at the top of the paper so that the whole of the figure apart from the top of his head is set against a white background. His obvious nakedness, his thin arms spreading out from his body and the sense that he might be about to lose his balance all suggest a fragility and vulnerability. But Gormley's human figures are famously impervious to clear and obvious interpretations which makes them, of course, all the more unsettling. Gormley has signed this on the verso (A.M.D. Gormley 27.8.12) and the painting is framed with a clear back so that it can be seen. Also seen is the fact that Gormley painted this on the plain white back of a small poster advertising the 2012 Voewood Festival… Read More

London: Archibald Constable and Co 1819, 1819. First edition. 12mo. 190x110mm. pp. viii, 170. Uncut in the original boards. Rubbing and some wear to extremities and boards are loose (but holding). Some foxing but otherwise in very good condition. Joseph John Gurney and Elizabeth Fry were brother and sister, scions of the great Gurney banking family. Elizabeth was already a noted campaigner for prison reform when she joined Joseph on a tour of prisons in Scotland and the North of England. This book is their report. It was presented to Parliament where it made an impact on Robert Peel who, as Home Secretary between 1822 and 1827, introduced the Gaols Act which led to payment for prison officers, education for prisoners, putting female warders in charge of female prisoners and the prohibition of the use of irons and manacles.
