Description:
First American Edition. Fine in original black and white cloth and fine pictorial dust jacket. Unfaded spine. Octavo. 5.75 x 8.5 in. [vi], 279 + [3] pp. A great copy.
A notable work by this jet-setting French novelist / diplomat / filmmaker, centering around the attempted 'de-programming' of a German Shepherd that had been trained, presumably by Southern racists, to attack and kill Black people; Gary, who finds the dog as a stray in the beginning of the book, elicits the help of an African-American animal handler in his attempt to cure the hound of its learned racism. Often characterized as a 'nonfiction autobiographical novel,' most of the book reads pretty much as a straight memoir -- albeit with some individuals anonymized -- of Gary's involvement in the American leftist/progressive political scene (Hollywood chapter) of the day. His presence in that milieu was in large measure due to the even deeper immersion of his then-wife, activist/actress Jean Seberg, who was notorious (at least in the eyes… Read More

Description:
First Edition, First Printing. Fine (as new) in original glossy pictorial boards and fine pictorial dust jacket. Signed by author on title page; very scarce copy, especially signed. Caldecott Medal Book. Fully illustrated with reproductions of color drawings. In 1972, French aerialist Philippe Petit stole into the nearly completed construction site of the World Trade Center, strung a tightrope between the two towers, and the following morning gave the city of New York an incredibly daring and long remembered performance. Gerstein was awarded the 2004 Caldecott award for his illustrations, with the two foldout panoramas that capture the drama, excitement, and anxiety of the historic death-defying feat. An immaculate copy of this Caldecott winner!

irst Edition, First Printing. Special Limited Edition, numbered 94 of 100 copies (110 in total). Signed by Green opposite the colophon on the half title. In the original French. Quite scarce thus. Near fine in original pebbled white leatherette printed in gilt within a blind-stamped block on the spine and in a good, chipped original acetate dust jacket. This is one of the great writer's spiritual biographies of our time. Of the diary, Francois Mauriac says: "It is unique in confessional literature and at all events the work of an inspired artist." Born of American parents in Paris, Julian Green became one of the most eminent of French men of letters, admired by men as diverse as Gide and Bernanos. He went to school in France, studied at the University of Virginia, and spent the war years in the United States. His dual cultural background was enriched further by his conversion to Catholicism, grafted on to a Puritan heritage. Vibrating to the unseen and unspoken as much as to surface reality, Julian… Read More
