First Edition. Stuart, a Dutch pastor and historian, was one of the strongest advocates in Holland of Gall's theory of localized brain function. Despite his theological background, Stuart "supported Gall in every way, with both regard to his explanation of brain anatomy and physiology and to his views on the relationship between the shape of the brain and the development of the skull. Fine set. edition, revised, of the Anatomie et physiologie du systeme nerveux(1810-19) which introduced the theory of localization of cerebral function. See Garrison-Morton 1389. This new edition in reduced format was revised by Gall without the collaboration of Spurzheim. The volumes(except vol. 3) bear the AUTOGRAPH SIGNATURE of Gall on the versos of their half-titles to protect against pirated editions. In order to hold the price down Gall did not republish the magnificent folio-sized plates of the first edition for the second, and he deleted the portion on the descriptive anatomy of the brain and nervous system, concentrating on the physiology. Provenance: Latimer Clark. Gassiot is best known for his investigations of voltaic electricity and the discharge of electricity through gases at low pressure. Arnaud-Eloi Gautier d'Agoty was the second son of the celebrated Jacques-Fabien Gautier d'Agoty (1717-86), who for thirty years held the royal privilege for color printing in France. J. F. Gautier d'Agoty was (or claimed to be) the inventor of the four-color method (red, blue, yellow and black) of printing mezzotints in color, an improvement on the three-color method devised in the early part of the 18th century by Jacques Christophe Le Blon.
